What book or piece of literature motivated you to write?

I read "Tess of the D'urbervilles" by Thomas Hardy, in my teens, and for the first time I was able to escape into another place and time. So began my love for the written words.

Henry David Thoreau's "Walden".  Read it while I was in Southeast Asia.  Really changed my focus.

I can't remember which one specifically. Scott O'Dell's novels always helped me feel welcome. The Ink collection, Poe, etc. In high school is where I actually tried writing. Now a few of those novels need to be rewritten, but they might have a chance.

Jack Kerouacs On The Road motivated / inspired me to both travel and write about it.  The style of Hunter S. Thompson also inspires me to write

Anything by Jackie Collins.  Of course she writes trash, but it's simple and straight forward.  I learned how to finish writing my novel after reading from her novels.

The god of small things by Arundhati Roy.Call it an Asian rip off of to kill a mocking bird as much as you like but the story is stark and painful.I guess it hit a nerve for me.That and Samuel Beckett's Waiting for Godot left me with an ache and yearning to make my thoughts heard since it made me contemplate...for a really long time.
