I think we are genetically predisposed to fight with our siblings, especially same sex siblings. My brothers and I were always fighting. I've never heard of siblings actually disliking each other because of it. That's what kids do.

It all depends on which stage they are in life. As young children and preteens kids often begin to discover how they are different from one another as well as begin forming their own opinions. Most kids don't have the patience and understanding to work out differences with each other and are more likely to resort to name calling, fighting and resentment. This was the case with my brother and I; we were total opposites, in both personality and personal interests. This led to confrontations and constant fighting while we were elementary age and young teens. After several years of high school and growing into our late teens and early twenties we formed a friendship and a bond that I could never have predicted ten years prior. It may take a long time for some and it may never occur for others, but siblings who constantly fight, can and often do end up liking each other and can become friends!

I can't speak for anyone else, but it was possible for me to get along with my two younger sisters much better after we all went away to different colleges and could be our own persons. Not being compared to each other or having to deal with favoritism so much really helped.  Now it's been 20+ years since we all left college, and we still get along great.
