Former president Jimmy Carter says America's not a 'functioning democracy'? What do you think?

Former President Jimmy Carter, in an interview with Der Spiegel, said he supported whistleblower Edward Snowden and that the NSA’s domestic spying program was against American values. Carter went on to say he does not believe that America currently has a functioning democracy. (FDL Newsdesk - July 19, 2013)

I agree. Democracy is a myth to give the people the illusion of power.

President Carter obviously prepared for this political position with partial embellishment to appease the press.  If he had spoken the truth, he would have informed the reporter for Der Spiegel that the USA was formed as a republic and not a democracy.  Therefore, expecting the USA to function as a democracy would be an erroneous expectation.  However, since President Carter is a pernicious Democrat, he is bound to erroneously believe the democracy conscription.  Of course, that is why during his leadership the nation failed to advance in any position within analyzed domains for world leadership.

I should hope not. We were set up, per the Constitution, as a Constitutional Republic. We are not supposed to be a democracy, Democracy, in it's basest form, is mob rules. So, while I don;t think this is the distinction he was making, he was right.

i am an Indian and know Jimmy Carter well because during his tenure he sorted out many issues with India and visited India as president of America.
I was young that time  and Carter supports Snow den and criticizes  present regime  and questioning functioning of healthy democracy. Certainly he has doubts
about presnt Obama regime and abilities.
