   The Suez canal, it is in our national securities interest to maintain the viability of the canal.

   Never say never... but as well as maintaining the viability of the Suez Canal, there is also the interests of Israel at stake. And of cause all western democracies would prefer not to end up with an Islamist Government in Egypt. Then there's the Syria Effect and.... oh... if only there was a simple solution to the problems of this part of the world - but there ain't!

      There's nothing wrong with Islamist governments. I think what you mean was RADICAL FUNDAMENTALISTIC Islamic Government.

      Islamist governments are generally anti capitalist unless they have wealth(oil) then they can be controlled preferably by a buyable dictator. The Israel equation is essential also but their pact with Christianity will keep them protected.

   Simple: Egypt is one of the more strategic locations in the Middle East. To keep the peace in the Middle East, Egypt is a lynchpin, and nobody does anything without Egypt (except crazies like Al Qaeda and Hamas). Previous invasions of Israel involved Egypt. Thus, by exercising with Egypt, US not only gains understanding of Egyptian military capabilities, it also makes Egypt hesitate to help start a new war in the MIddle East, and risk all the aid it gets from the US, now that USSR no longer exists and they have to actually PAY for the stuff.

   We don't have anything better to do with $1 Billion a year?  Why we don't write off the middle east as a total loss is beyond me.  I've lived there.  I've sent a husband and a son there for years at a time.  And I say, the last American to leave, turn off the lights.  Our one ally, Israel, can take care of itself with a little backup from afar.

      Who is America? It is an uncontrollable entity driven by commerce. No person or group is America or controls it but rather those in power simply clears a path for it to roll along. When you see inaction or rhetoric they are simply strategising.
