What ARE the 10 WORST things parents can say to an unpopular child in school?
The child is fat, or skinny
The child is not good enough
Dress properly
Pay attention to their appearance
Be alert at all times
Don't be so shallow
Smile more
Be more awake with their surroundings
Don't be such jerk
I hated this one when I was growing up: Grow up and get over it!
Famous author Harlan Ellison from Cleveland, Ohio probably suffered from one of the worst comments of all time, from his mom--
He was very short, Jewish, and severely bullied physically and verbally in his childhood neighborhood of mostly all taller, non-Jewish neighbor kids. His mom repeatedly told him that "he must be doing something to provoke the bullying." He was devastated, I believe from reading his reminiscences.
As an adult, a writer, and still short, Eliison suffered some bullying from producers, including Gene Roddenberry. Lawsuits remedied some of it.
In his 80s now, Ellison's anger has increased over the decades to explode into rants we can see on YouTube. These have some merit, because he advises the legions of young writers who write for free or for $1.00 per 1,000 words that they are causing the writing business - including Internet content - to offer all levels of authors less money.
