Do you know why the dog is the favorite pet?
It has something to do with its name that is subconscious to us.
Actually, I recently read an article claiming that there are more pet cats in the world than pet dogs. (That's not even counting all the additional animals of both species that are either feral, strays, abandoned or free-ranging.)
That factoid doesn't mean I think cats are the favorite pet, rather than dogs. I realize that many, many people prefer cats, while many, many people prefer dogs. Some cat-lovers have a houseful of cats, but some dog-lovers share their homes with multiple dogs as well. Then, there are other homes where dogs and cats co-exist (for the most part) in harmony because the humans enjoy having both around.
A recent scientific study links certain personality traits to pet owners who consider themselves basically "cat people" or "dog people." The results of this research are intriguing no matter where you categorize yourself with regard to dogs or cats.
Personally, I'm a "dog person." I think dogs are incredibly wonderful beings! I came to this conclusion rather late in life and regret all those years when I did not share my home and time with a dog. However, I'm doing my best to make up for wasted opportunity. Since I'm retired, I spend most of every day with my dog. I feed and care for her, talk to her, play with her and probably pay more for her healthcare than I do for my own.
In return, she loves me as though I'm the most important creature in the world, and I suppose I am...for her. I love her dearly and can't imagine life without her now, though she has health issues and will be nine years old in a couple of weeks. I try not to think about the possibility of losing her. As far as I'm concerned, the only negative thing about dogs is that their lifespans are heartbreakingly brief relative to the average lifespan of a human.
Dogs rock!
By the way, I noticed your hint that the name (of the species itself?) has subconscious meaning. I've read that "dog" spelled backward is "god", so perhaps that is what you meant.
That is what I was hinting at. Man has been 'worshiping' dogssince way back in time.
The problem with that dog/god relationship you are hinting at is that it only works in English. Where I live the dog is "cãe" or "cachorro", God is Deus. Dog is chien in French, Kelb in Moroccan Arabic.
None of which takes away from dogs.
The spelling for the lanuage may be different but in reality the animal is still the same - a 'dog'.

Why did you choose a dog/cat for a pet instead of the other?

Which do you prefer as a pet? A dog or a cat? And are you a man or a woman?I am not sure if it be myth or truth that men prefer dogs and women prefer cats. Personally, I fall into the stereotypical dog-loving man. But maybe I am just that. A stereotype. Maybe,...

If you could have any animal as a pet what would it be?

I want a kitten because they seem quite and calm. I'm also an animal lover, so I still like having a dog.
