He brought an end to the DECADES of "only rich white men matter" Prez Obama gave voice to many invisible people-spoke UP for women, gays, and DARED to mention racism, and rich people paying their share. A humanitarian, rather than a business tycoon....halleluyah! We are never going back.

Health care reform.  Yes, he is the first black president, just like JFK was the first Catholic, Nixon was the first (hopefully only) president to resign, and someday there will be a first woman.  Once there is more than one in each category, the uniqueness goes away.  But health care reform will someday be looked upon like the advent of social security and people will wonder how anybody ever even hesitated to establish it.

Your final sentence is a great observation. People will wonder how we did without it.

President Obama will always be identified as the first Black president. Secondly, he will be recognized for his work in health care reform. How he is recognized, negatively or positively, will depend on how the AHC Act works. The disastrous roll out and the petty bickering in Congress will not be recorded in the history books. Again depending upon the success of the AHC in the next few years, will be the determining factor for the Obama legacy. He should get some credit for the economy improving after it faltered so much during the final term of Geroge W. Bush, who will be remembered, not for the falure of the market, but his response to 9-11.

For better or for worse, Obama will always be linked to the Affordable Care Act. Heck, the colloquial reference for this act even bears his name, ObamaCare.

Undoubtedly, progressives will see this as a sterling legacy. Those on the Right will see it as his scarlet letter.

The same way that FDR is always remembered as the father of Social Security, so to will Obama be remembered for health care reform. The overriding difference, however, is that that FDR's legacy was always hedged by the fact that he was President during WW2. Whether you found his New Deal to be a blessing, or if you saw it as the dawn of the nanny state, FDR's leadership during the war made that thread moot and secured his positive legacy throughout the ages as an effective wartime leader.

Obama does not have such a display of powerful leadership upon which to hitch his legacy hopes. The same way that Lyndon Johnson's legacy consists solely of the Vietnam War debacle and the so called war on poverty, Obama will only be able to rely on the Affordable Care act and a vast series of broken promises, meekness and indecision in matters of foreign affairs.

In all probability, his legacy will consist solely of being the first black President. Everything else will always be the source for biased opinions from the left and the right.

Johnson had his Great Society Program, which included  Medicare. It was also during the Johnson Administration that the Civil Rights Bill  (initiated by Kennedy) was approved by Congress and signed by Johnson. Nixon pushed Vietnam war into Cambodia.
