That was irrelevant advice in retrospect considering the Northern Hemisphere would have been practically uninhabitable in an all-out nuclear exchange.

I wrote a hub on survival exercises for the Cold War family---tips from the government and emergency agencies on how to survive a nuclear Armageddon without leaving your suburban ranch house...wink

Kenneth, my what a title! Thanks for sharing; I had not heard of it, but it reminds me of the Dive and Duck drills we still went through when I was going to school in Mississippi!

"The Relaxation Response" by Herbert Benson

"Anatomy of An Illness" by Norman Cousins

The teachings of these men, were well ahead of their time and their beliefs held in great regard by people in Behavioral Medicine/psychoneuroimmunology: mind-body medicine, Bernie Siegal and the Simontons followed their coattails.

Yes, remember it well being required to read it multiple times. It actually was proven true here later on by observance. The name was 'The Peter Principle' and its basic premise was that all people eventually rise to their level of incompetence at their work and can go no further. Its solution was that one be satisfied at a level where they're happy and competent and quit worrying about 'keeping up with the Jones.' Not your considered but still....

Dr Spock's "Baby and Child Care".

Why is it not embraced today?

    Simple:

The book is not informed by "fads" and trends; not informed by what celebrities are doing. The book has no political or social or cultural or religious agenda.

The book is just common sense, good old-fashioned child care---child care before being a kid was medicalized and psychologized to the point of near-total absurdity.

Thanks mbuggieh! I remember some of my friends' moms had that one! And you are probably on target with the evaluation.
