What do you think happens in a Coven?
I am just curious as to what people think of this from all sides of religion and non-religion.
You may find the most enlightened responses by approaching some real witches with this question. I can tell you this, real covens are nothing like the propagandized and fantasy b.s you see in movies and on television. Blessed be.
I think this question is asking: If you don't know what happens in a coven, what do you think does? So I'll answer accordingly. My idea of coven activities are regular meetings on the sabbats and full moons and talking about what these dates and their meanings. I don't picture a sermon, but I do imagine celebrations and potlucks. I don't know if there's always a I'm sure there's some networking for the equivalent of prayer groups where members get together to do a circle with a specific purpose. I imagine some covens being really organized and others being groups of about five people who just kind of do whatever. I picture families meeting together, the same as I would see other religious groups attending church services. I have no idea about what would be considered a "service" in a coven setting. I think it depends on the group. Maybe some cast circle every time while others don't. For having researched Wicca in the past, I still feel very clueless about coven activities, but am interested to know more and hear what others think happen, no matter their beliefs.
I have a couple of friends on Facebook who regularly post photos of their coven meetings. It looks like lots of meetings out in the woods, with friends and family and food.
I know what happens in my ritual circles and those I have been part of.
A lot of fun and laughter, a bit of singing and music. The chance to experience magic and ritual with a group.
Sometimes a coven has a ritual circle, sometimes it doesn't when they meet.
If meeting to celebrate a sabbat, there may be a short play or part of the ritual may be used to pay homage to the changing of the seasons. If meeting to celebrate an esbat, there may be spellwork or healing work.
I've been part of rituals where the leaders couldn't organise a piss up in a brewery and people left it feeling disjointed and unfilfulled, and I've been a part of rituals that had no leaders but everyone left feeling better inside and more connected to those around them.
And I add this simply because I try to never take myself too seriously.
Pagans don't practice human sacrifice any more, but they are maintaining list, just in case we decide to start it up again. Please let me know if you would like to be on it.
I know what happens in a coven, as I've belonged to one.
You're trained in a spiritual path. You learn a lot, there's a lot of self-examination. If there is good leadership and the coven is a right fit for you, you'll find there is a lot of potential for personal and spiritual growth.
You meet for worship, you celebrate holidays, you have discussions-- it can be a great community, not that much different than a church except it's a small, intimate group of friends; you get very close and supportive of each other.

I wrote a hub on this topic (using this title) explaining my belief that although religion does some good in the world, it does more harm than good. This sparked a debate in the comments section. I thought that debate might better be conducted in the forum. A brief comment on the hub--pro or...
