Should Ray Rice and Adrian Peterson be reinstated to the NFL?
Raven RB Ray Rice lost his appeal of his suspension which had been levied based on his domestic violence incident with his wife. Adrian Peterson was charged with felony child abuse, which he subsequently pled down and now wants to be reinstated. From a legal standpoint, they probably should be reinstated. But from a public relations standpoint, it's a nightmare and Goodell cannot allow it.
I think they should be reinstated. They worked their entire lives to be in the position that they are in, to punished so greatly for a very very BAD mistake and poor decision is just wrong. They should perhaps take anger management, childcare classes and receive therapy. These men families have suffered enough and to add lost income from this is just sad!
Yes at some point they should be reinstated.
If they had been truck drivers, barbers, or custodians no one would say they should be banned from their occupation for life. Even if they were heart surgeons or attorneys they wouldn't have their licenses taken away for life over issues in their personal lives.
I suspect those who want to take away their career in sports hate the fact that they make millions of dollars per year and that many people worship or idolize sports figures.
Nevertheless if you look at their crime no other person would be expected to never work in their chosen career again.
An eight game or even a year suspension should have been handed out immediately. It would have driven home the point to the players and the fans that the NFL takes these issues seriously.
Also when one compares the NBA allowing Kobe Bryant to continue to play basketball while being on trial for rape and Hope Solo (female soccer player) accused of domestic violence is being allowed to play while Nike continues to pay her endorsement money sends a mixed message!
Is the NFL being held to higher or different standard because of the sport's violent nature and (popularity) or is it the NBA and Soccer leagues don't believe in punishing their players for off court/field actions? The public outrage is silent by comparison.
If I was their employer, I would say no. I would not care if the person was a school bus driver, a cubicle jockey or an athlete in the public eye. These incidents are very bad and cause so much harm and distraction within the workplace, even if the workplace is a football field. Whether they want to admit it or not, there will be at least some short if not long term negativity associated with the mere mention of their names or seeing them on jerseys. I would not want their negative actions associated with my team if I were an owner. Unless I'm mistaken, most states are at will employment states so the league should be able to do as they choose either way. But, I guess it's a great thing for them that it's not my decision.
You said it wouldn't matter to you if they were a bus driver you don't think they should get their job back. Would you expect the government/us to support their families? Every able bodied person should be allowed to have a job somewhere.
I still lean towards them getting back to work because professional athletes (and even big time college athletes) with spare time on their hands, usually proves even more dangerous. But you're right, from a PR standpoint, it's a nightmare.
I understand dashingscorpio but. I wouldn't expect the gov't to support them. I would expect them to find employment elsewhere, start their own company or both. As the song/saying goes "you don't have to go home but you can't stay here."
