Do you believe that immigration to the United States should be halted until unemployment among

Americans be drastically reduced, if not eliminated?

Yes! We should take better care of our own first.

I'm in agreement! We always hear that about foreign wars, but then we let in a good 100,000 over the Mexican border last summer. Double standard? Could someone shed some light? Both humanitarian. Our own continue to suffer.

gmwilliams - Not a simple question to answer.

In my area there are Help Wanted signs on many of the busines's I pass by on a daily basis.  Even at my age I could find a job today if I needed one.  Yes, most likely these are entry level jobs that don't pay a huge amount of money, but there are jobs available.  Entry level jobs can lead to much higher paying positions for those willing to work hard and learn.

Fruit growers are forced to hire illegals to harvest their crops because none of the local unemployed will even respond to their help wanted ads.  We used to have a Federal guest worker program that took care of this need, but that of course was dropped because it worked.  Hard working fruit pickers get paid by the box and make some darn good money.

Of course many of our unemployed don't seek work because of that dreaded drug testing requirement.  Anyone who can pass a drug screen can go to work today in the Texas oil patch driving a truck for 80 to 100K per year.  If I were younger I would be there myself.

A labor shortage usually forces employers to pay higher wages.  With our high rate of unemployment we sure can't say there is a labor shortage, just a whole lot of people who don't want to work.

If I was a farmer and was going to lose my entire crop because I couldn't get anyone to pick the fruit, I can honestly tell you I would not care if applicants were legal or not legal.  I would hire people that could and would do the work.

A better option for our own citizens would be a phase-out program where they didn't lose all of there welfare benefits if they took a job.  That is one of the reasons our unemployment levels remain so high.  They basically can't afford to go to work.  The welfare system today is badly flawed and serves as a trap for many who would like to work.  Why bother going to work if you can make more by staying home and doing nothing?

I understand your point: BUT not everyone is going to stop at lettuce picking. The POTUS) said, that some of these people will 'advance.'' That poses quite a threat to the millions of unemployed AMERICANS.

We will be spending a fair piece of $$ to enact and then enforce the law and like has been said many a time before (only that time was spoken against war), "why don't we spend this money on the American people"

Well, this was the chance for the POTUS to put his money where his mouth was, spend money and create jobs for AMERICANS, but he chose to snub AMERICAN CITIZENS to win approval (it's payback time) from a community who donated heavily towards his reelection.

Old Poolmah has a point about the fact that there ARE jobs and the advancement potential. But at age 55? Advance from lettuce picker to lettuce picker II and then supervisor of the lettuce pickers by age 70? That is not the way for US skilled labor force to expand. Give 'em a lettuce picking job!

That said, any efforts at immigration reform will fail if securing out borders is not part of the bill or has 'has gone before'

There will be no effort to secure the borders.  Too many potential votes come through that door.  I feel extremely sorry for the border patrol agents assigned to this mission impossible.

I am getting nauseous just thinking about this Old Poolman, aren't you?  America is going down the toilet.  Don't you hear a flush?

All in the name of politics. I won't go any further but than to say that something so commonsensical to the American people (securing the borders) is not so commonsensical to the people they elect to do their business.

Oh they know the border needs to be secured, it is just not in their political best interest to do that right now.  I'm glad I'm old enough I probably wont live long enough to see the end result of this damage by these idiots.

Old Pool, I'm older, but age doesn't really matter on this one. America, it's simple. Do you want this to be the sort of halr-brained kind of scheming that goes on in DC? Political croneyism and correctness? Or do you want your reps to rep YOU?

Maybe the wrong question, as there are plenty of Europeans who would really LOVE to get legal access to the US jobs market, would speak your language, hold mostly similar beliefs, not seek to change your society and are probably less prone to become criminals if allowed access, and would be prepared to work at whatever wages were on offer.

Your country simply refuses them access.

Maybe your leaders are deliberately trying to dumb down your society and weaken the American dream work ethic?

Good point, agua. No one wants to say it, but those who rule this country don't want more educated white people to come. They are forcing this country to become more multi-cultural, at everyone's expense.

The problem is we hate to think anybody can be better in our twisted society, but fact is some folks are more beneficial to a society than others, the smart society encourages smarter folk to join them.

"Your country simply refuses them access." Don't EU countries require passports to cross borders? I'm on an investigation for info, and speak as the wife of someone unemployed 4 years. If there is equal skill, COME, from abroad,  but "get in line."

Immigration as in becoming full US citizen or the work visas that allow companies such as IBM and Oracle to bring in people from India or Brazil at lower cost to replace US citizens, particularly in the tech fields?  Although I've worked and managed many of these people even developing good friendships I think we should put a stop to that.  They give reason as skill set, but from my experience not one is above the other. And communication is often a problem making it harder to get correct work done. It would be nice to see companies invest in their own people.

I read today where the illegals granted amnesty and work permits will not be eligible for Obamacare.  This means employers can hire them and not have to provide healthcare or pay the fines for not providing health care.  Look out legal citizens.
