Can you think of something that's broke and still works?

A broken clock will still work by telling the correct time twice a day.

Other than a clock this answer looks like it's definitely going to be the biggest possibility.

We as humans are broken that's why we're always striving to work at something...some work hard, some work poorly.

... Some just go through the motions. I've had too many of them as colleagues in my working life. The only thing I miss being retired is the cash I got with all my overtime and 'perks' (extra pay for working on machines, extra money for shift work).

You can get an egg out of its shell easy enough - but it's not easy to get it back in again if you change your mind.

A broke mirror. A broken screen. A broken scale and of course a broken human being.

A broken human being might still work, but not to their best ability. You still need to wind up the mechanism to get her/him going. The offer of a raise might help (even if it's a lie - you can make excuses later, best to keep them hoping).

It depends on how severely the human is broken.

A piece from a broken mirror is another great answer, however you need to brace yourself for the 7 years of bad luck that will follow.

Sharpen the end of it and a pencil which is broken will still write, it may just be harder for you to use. :-)

Well, some countries are fundamentally broke and still manage to "work" or survive...
