What makes some people in the United States willingly embrace & content/satisfied
being socioeconomically poor &impoverished, always being in a precarious socioeconomic situation when the socioeconomic roof could fall any day? What makes some people being happy with living at the bottom of society, always being on the outside, looking in; barely existing/surviving at the most basic/rudimentary level, being preoccupied with the lower human needs; & content with the scraps of society?
I don't think this condition is by choice. There ae many people who simply cannot get beyond their socioecoomic condition. However, if I were to think about it psychologically and i these people were actually making a choice to remain impoverished, i might say that the reason is that it keeps them from having to be responsible. When you don't have anything to give, no one can require anthing out of you.
I am giving you a psychological hug at the moment. What you have eloquently elucidated is very SPOT ON. Being poor/in poverty in the United States is a mindset, psychology & consciousness among many people. They are also very negative people.
Having grown up in poverty myself, in a blue-collar oilfield town in Texas, I suspect that many of those you describe just simply don't know anything different. They've never had the faintest whiff of prosperity or success in their own lives, and truly don't realize that it might be a possibility for them.
Watching the successful lives of others on TV and in the movies is one thing; actually sitting in a roomful of upper middle-class folk is quite a different experience. My own epiphany came when I was 23 years old, at a wedding shower, when I realized that beds were supposed to have TWO sheets. At that moment, I got that whiff and saw the possibilities.
A quite original synopsis of the situation at hand indeed.
