    What are the best small towns to live in, in the United States?

    I am curious what people would recommend in regards to considering relocating to a small town in the United States?  This may sound like an odd question, but I wanted to pose it anyway to see what the response is.  Not all small or rural towns are created equal.  I suppose that advice of any to stay away from is also welcome.  For someone wanting something minimal, peaceful, possibly welcoming to outsiders, etc, what is a good town or state with the best small towns? Ideally, in the Southern portion, East to West coast, totally open.  Open to northern states as well.

    My vote's Lewisburg, WV, which was voted America's Coolest Small Town a few years ago in Budget Travel's yearly competition for the title.  We can't wait to retire there.

    There are many small towns that I think are beautiful to live in.  But I would say Marquette, MI or anywhere around the UP of Northern part of Michigan.   Not only is Marquette covered by Lake Superior and beautiful forests.  It is also a great place to raise a family and everyone is welcoming.  Although, keep in mind that it is very cold.

      Glenora, I love hearing about the Northern areas as well.  In fact, when you mentioned Lake Superior, I really perked up because after driving through that area before, I really loved it!  One can work with the cold for sure.  Thank you!

    This changes all of the time and when you choose a certain state or at least narrow down your area you have different answers. For your area the list is long but here are some.
    For 2015 -
    In the Southern states, east to west coast we have: Arlington, Virginia; Palo Alto, Berkely and Santa Clara in California; Asheville, No. Carolina; San Mateo, Santa Barbara, California; Overland Park, Kansas; Rockville, Maryland; Pasadena, Sunnyvale, moutain View, California; Durham, No. Carolina; San Rafael, California; Frederick, Maryland; Greenville, So. Carolina; Sandy Springs, Georgia; Miami Beach, Florida; Towson, Maryland; Temp, Arizona; Alameda, Fullerton, California;
    These are only some of the southern states - east to west - besides the rest of the southern, there is much more of the USA to cover.

      Thanks, Examiner! You are right about it changing all the time too, and it almost made me not ask the question.  Still, I love to know what people's thoughts are on it.  That is great, thanks.
