   Are American Idol winners an accurate reflection of US opinion in general?
   
   Love the show. Often disagree with winner. Don't vote myself, but suspect most voters are teenage females who tend to favor young males. A cursory web search confirms many others think this as well.
   
   How does Nick whose vocal range was usually well within the safe zone, beat Jax and Clark who consistently took emotion, style, and vocal ability way beyond that? Same thing when Phillip Phillips beat Jessica Sanchez (excellent Whitney Houston songs) a few years back.
   
   I thinks IA is ending next year because the voting doesn't reflect the viewership. Feedback to or for is welcome.

   In the show's early years, I'd say "yes." Look at Kelly Clarkson and/or Carrie Underwood - they managed to turn their "Idol" notoriety into continued popularity.
   After the first few years, though, when the show's notoriety wore off, the winners seemed less "in tune" with overall American pop tastes, and therefore they were less popular. Where have you seen Taylor Hicks lately? Ruben Studdard? Kris Allen? Lee DeWyze? 
   (I actually had to look up the names of the past "Idol" winners to come up with Allen and DeWyze. Nuff said.)

      Hi Keith. I believe you're correct about AI winners becoming less popular as the show's novelty wears off each passing year. That, plus increasing competition from similar shows, is probably why the show is winding down next year.

   This show and other 'reality' shows are a reflection of the down grading of US television. The population has been suckered in for decades to accept less and less on television. Occasionally some brave souls put something decent on such as Hell on Wheels and Gotham. These shows are few and far between thanks to programs such as American Idol.

      Sure, there's lots of sub-par TV. but AI is a quality production. The judges in particular, have been a class act. With  DVR one can filter on only preferred viewing and FF commercials. I learn a lot from the History, Science, and Financial channels.
