   That young people should respect the old simply because of the age difference, even between complete strangers.
   
   There is nothing that demands any kind of automatic respect towards anyone the moment they meet. When they say respect is earned, its for a reason.

   What an interesting question. I can speak from first person perspective while ponder the third. I am amazed with both the knowledge the youth has today as well as the awareness and practice of wellness almost becoming second nature. I am speaking even of kindergarten, first grade, and etc. That presents a compare / contrast between generations while a question to ask is understanding how each arrived upon knowledge and awareness.
   
   I like how the question simply asked between the old and young. That offers understanding there will be differences between a seven year old for instance with a seventeen year old, a twenty-seven year old, and so forth. Differences between young and old does not have to be just that as the colloquial thought of grandparents, parents, and children.

   I am a middle-aged person who works as a substitute teacher and has written a facts-of-life book for teens.  My favorite fantasy is living in a summer camp type community with the young, and the young-at-heart. 
   Being "in the middle" age-wise, I've noticed a lot of adults my age and older (and younger, in some instances) tend to look down on teens.  They believe they're rebellious, and have no sense at all.  One friend says I wasted my time writing my book, because no teen is going to pay attention to it.  Another friend used to lead a folk dance group in my area; I had her help me introduce some high school students into the scene, and she recently told me she was traumatized by this.  She dislikes teens, even fears them.
   My personal experience with teens is that they tend to be idealistic and driven, like in the movie "Fame".  The "bad" ones are usually like that because they don't know better.  True, I live in Hawaii where even the ghettos aren't that bad.  Oakland CA would present with an entirely different picture - but how many places are that awful?

   That the young are somehow 'not as good' as their generation. I don't know how many times I've heard phrases like 'they don't build them like they used to' or 'kids are so spoiled/disrespectful/lazy these days'. I completely understand being nostalgic for the time in which we grew up, but that's no reason to assume that the next generation is worse, just because it's different. There are a lot of creative, intelligent, and hard working people in every generation. None are inherently better than another.
