Who do you think is affected most in a break up?, the one who breaks up or the one being told?
I guess it would really depend on the situation. If the person who was being told thought things were going great and was completely blind sided, then I'd guess the biggest impact would be on them.
Other times however, you may love someone and know that they are toxic and potentially harmful to you. In that case, you may still love that person but decide that you deserve better - and in that case, it would likely be you impacted the most because you would be sacrificing something for your own greater good ultimately.
So many different scenarios could impact this so it's really hard to say.
The one being told because the other person put their foot down and basically said "I'm good." It hurts to be dismissed.
Generally speaking people only "put their foot down" because they were hurt first or was not getting what (they) wanted.
It only hurts to be dismissed (if you care) and you thought your mate was happy/content but they shocked you!
As Christin stated it depends on the situation.
If you caught your "significant other" having sex with someone else and (you) ended the relationship it may well be (you) who is hurting the most! One could also muster the courage to leave a toxic relationship even though they are still "in love" with them.
On the other hand if it's matter of one person feeling as though the relationship has run it's course while the other person is content with the way things are; it's most likely that person will be affected more by the breakup. From their point of view the breakup came as sort of a shock. It's the equivalent of showing up for work and being fired.
Last but not least when you breakup with someone you have no control over how they will react. In some instances there are cases of stalking, violence, and even murder. Both people are then "affected".
