The importance of the 10 Commandments is that it is basically God's roadmap for how he expects us to act. At some point in time, every person will break one, maybe more, of the commandments. Then you have to deal with the conflicts.
The 10 commandments say "thy shall not kill."
The Book of Ecclesiastes in the Bible says there is a "A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up." That passage was used in a hit song by the Byrds many years ago.
We kill in wars to protect our country. People kill others to protect their families.
The 10 Commandments are a guide, or road map for our lives. We will all face different circumstances and challenges. Sometimes we resist temptation and anger. Other times we do things in the hope of helping others. We just have to do our best to follow that plan.

As long you follow the rules, at least there is a chance that you may enter heaven right?

The 10 commandments are important for many reasons.  Primarily, they point to mankind's need for Jesus the Christ, a Savior.  The other reasons have tremendous benefits, but that they help us understand the fallen nature of the human heart and help us see the inadequacy of our ability to help ourselves is the greatest blessing the 10 Commandments offer us.

April, no matter how old or young one is when he/she comes "unto" Christ, it is a "growing process!"  I Peter 2:2 says "As newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that ye may "grow" by it."

As in school, one must learn the alphabet before forming words, sentences, paragraphs, stories, etc.  So are The Ten Commandments, the basics for coming "unto" Christ!  Afterwards, we study Scripture, praying, believing and having "faith", in what He has said acquiring "growth!"

Galatians 3:24-25 says "Wherefore the "law" was our "schoolmaster" to bring us "unto" Christ, that we might be justified by "faith!"  (V25)  But after "faith" is come, we are "no longer" under a "schoolmaster."

There is an "unto" Christ (learning Scripture) and an "into" Christ (understanding via Holy Spirit what He's said) and allowing Holy Spirit to change our lives or cause "growth!"   After acquiring "faith," the Holy Spirit "teaches and guides" one into "all truth" (John 14:26; 16:13)!

Therefore, The Ten Commandments are "essential" or we will never be able to form words, sentences, paragraphs, stories, etc. or "grow" in Christ Jesus!

Consider this Spiritual journey as school!  Kindergarten to PhD!  Study (II Timothy 2:15) to obtain PhD "in Christ!"
