   Why do so many well-meaning people base all their politics on issues that affect only a few?
   
   Abortion and same sex marriage affect only a small percentage of Americans.  Why do so many well-meaning people base all their political choices on only these two issues when there are many other issues that affect people every single day (education, healthcare, infrastructure, defense, etc.)

   Actually I believe both parties and all voters are in favor of having a strong economy, good jobs, a good educational system, safe neighborhoods, social security, and a good healthcare system.
   No one I know of is {voting against} any of those things!
   What gets people riled up is their (differences) on how social issues should be addressed and how much or what type of intervention if any the government should have in resolving these issues.
   Essentially the majority of voters are in agreement about most things.

      I agree.  And our differences are so divisive and when you think about it, they involve a very small percent of our population.

   They are making their decisions based on the political issues of greatest importance to them. It is like house shopping - what factors you prefer (location, size, view) don't matter to anyone else.

      And I think they are failing to keep the main thing the main thing.  It is not a Christian's job to convict others of their perceived sin.  It is their job to do the work Jesus commanded them to do: feed the hungry, tend to the sick, care for needs.

   Many belive some beliefs only effect a few. Then you discover yourself in the middle of what you think doesn't effect  you and discover your thinking was wrong. This happened last summer.

      Issues may seem to affect only a few, but, for instance, blood in Benghazi cries for justice. What it matters now is important, as with other issues people dismiss because of a broken moral compass. Resolve that and everything else becomes easier.

   I have wondered this as well. I have a lot of well-meaning friends and family members who will only vote for a pro-life candidate and it puzzles me since it puts them in such a vulnerable position. They do not really get to vote. I understand that for many it is a moral issue, but many of the problems facing the country are moral issues. And, as this presidential campaign is proving, when a voter puts all their eggs in one basket, the candidate can do pretty much anything and still not lose their vote. Unfortunately for many of my white Evangelical friends and family members they are going to be disappointed in the upcoming years, because as Christian author Robert P. Jones points out in The End of White Christian America the millennials are here and both Parties will shift platforms to accommodate this new, large demographic of voters.

      Here's hoping.  I feel like my religion has been hijacked by one or two specific causes that are easy to support because they cost most people nothing.  That kind of cause is what I call Lazy Christianity.  I'm about to write a hub on it.
