Has political correctness killed all hopes of meaningful comedy?
Are smart people capable of understanding the underpinnings of comedy? Or too smart to know when someone is being funny?
since when did people start feeling so attacked by a simple joke?
Comedy is subjective. However, if for the sake of argument we assume that the comedy in question is well written and insightful, then political correctness has only rendered it offensive to the simple minded and hyper-sensitive social crusader types.
Comedy has always been attacked for its content, remember Lenny Bruce?
George Carlin was one of my favorite comedians, some tried to destroy his career but never managed to do that. I think if a comedian is truly talented he will overcome whatever social hurdles are placed in his/her way.
Look how people like David Letterman and Jon Stewart are treated just because they dare make a joke about Sarah Palin or George Bush... (Even though they often make jokes about the opposition) They are added to the liberal-agenda conspiracy...
People do have to laugh more...
It all started back in the early 70's I do believe. A spate of ethnic jokes abounded then, No more joking about Pollocks or Limies and such. Richard Pryor was the only one then that could get away with it along with a few others. People are just too sensitive, but I personally don't like some of the ones I have heard that are disgusting in a racial way.
The civil rights movement brought a lot of the white vs. everyone else over the last 400-ish years out, which turned into a historical research project to find everywhere that Europe went, mainly focused on England, but France and Portugal get a little glance here and there... nobody goes back as far as Rome and NOBODY goes back as far as the Mexica/Aztec or Incas or Mayans or any other empires on any continents other than Europe because obviously those peoples all built their massive empires through love and hugs, and besides that ruins the white-as-perpetrators thing that underpins PC. Since then, anything with an edge has to be delivered through a non-white pair of lips as caucasians have to pay pennance for their genetic heritage for a while.
I always look at humor as just that. No hidden meanings, no hidden agenda, just something to laugh at.
Kinda like the saying, the act is not criminal, if the intent is not criminal. So if your just looking for a laugh, people should lighten up and laugh and forget about any political correctness. If you can't laugh at yourself then you are way too uptight!
On the other hand, some people are trying to be mean and try to use humor as a vehicle for their vitriol, i.e. Bill Maher. Even then, if you laugh them off, you are ahead of the game.
