Great picture doc, it's pretty scary...Totally with you on the 'day after tomorrow' fears! It's crazy, I live on the western coast of Scotland and the snow here is only tweo inches deep - but we are right next to the sea and never, ever, ever get snow here that lies...they say there's too much salt in the air.

I went to my home town recently in central scotland. Normally it's a two hour journey but just before christmas there it took eight and a half hours. Three hours stuck on a train and three stuck on a back road in the middle of nowhere but only two miles from home. There were fourteen accidents just ahead of us and (can you believe this) the council has cancelled the gritter trucks in our area because of budget cuts and they hadn't salted any roads. They were coming out only in emergencies.

Ironic don't you think that we have a cold climate and yet anything more than two inches of snow makes the entire country grind to a halt.

    Still; everybody loves the snow!

I'm not even Canadian and let me tell you, five inches is a light dusting!!!!

I remember travelling to the south one time in the winter in my car, and they got just an itty bitty bit of snow, and you would've thought the Martians had landed.  It was a state of emergency and cars backed up on the highway for miles and miles.  We from the frozen North couldn't really see what the problem was.  To us it was nothing...to them, it was a freakin' horrorshow.  Weird.

I think the city I live in actually broke the WORLD record for most snow accumulations in one winter a few years ago. Presumably the problem in (southern) England is that municipalities don't invest in snow-clearing equipment, so when they get any, it's nearly impossible to drive (that and a lack of appropriate tires/tyres, depending how you wanted to spell that... smile )

(just realized you're from the northern US, not the north of Britain.... either way, my comment is the same...)

LOLOL  lol I think I brought the snow to the UK with me , from the heart of the Rockies.. We could have 'Feet' O snow and still get around ( typically with the powder flu) since we wanted to ski versus be at work LOLOL... that is why I am so laughing here in wee Wales.. though, hey kids love it.. nearly a month off of school for christmas holiday.. big_smile   I do so love my new world... sigh
