In Ireland when we meet someone, we say "howr ya" or "hows it goin"

   In Ireland when i was younger when you met someone on the street etc you would say "howr ya" whether you knew them or not. When i went to England for the first time i walked down the busy streets saying "howr ya" to everyone that passed. No one answered,  but twas hard to break the habit.  Mad isnt it.
   
   What do you say when you meet or greet someone?

   "Nice to meet you Tipperary" - that's what I'd say in a formal situation. If it's more casual, "Hey, how ya doin?"

   I always say, morning, or good afternoon, how are you? then i smile while saying that

   In small towns in the US people tend to say 'hi' or tip their head or wave, when driving.
   
   In bigger towns or cities people don't say 'hi' or wave. 
   
   I like the small town friendliness.

      I find the exact opposite to be true.
      
      I simply say "hello". It's one of the classics.

   yeah i noticed that when i moved to Ireland, everyone greets you, as you walk down the street...... not quite so much as when we first moved here 12 years ago.... everyone used to leave their keys in the door also, and still the kids leave all their toys out at night, knowing when they get up they will still be there.  When we go back to England it takes me a few days to remember everyone does not say hiya in the street......

      yeah your right, everyone saluted everyone whether u knew them or not or liked them or not,  and its true,  we dont do it as often now.

   I always acknowledge someone I pass or someone standing next to me with a smile or hello. if I catch a child's eye, I always smile. people love to be noticed, young, old and in between.

      I always smile at people.  Where i live they smile back, but if I go to the city, I get glared at!  Strange how people behaviour differently in different settings.x

    The Aussie greeting is supposedly "G'day" but you won't hear it in the big cities much.
    
    In Sydney, like most large cities, you'd get a funny look if you greeted everyone on the street!

    I look people in the eye, smile, and nod...sometimes say hi, or good morning if it's applicable. My husband grew up in Detroit, and told me that this behavior could get someone shot in the big city...I'm so glad I live in a tiny little town in a forgotten corner of the US .
