I would have to say Fleetwood Mac "Then Play on".  After Peter Green was gone, so was one of the greatest rock blues bands........Pheww ole Danny Kirwan could bend strings sweetly.

I also like Pink Floyd "Wish you Were Here"  & "Dark Side of the Moon"

      Oh yes.............. Rush 2112

        Woohoo - someone said 2112!

There are so many great albums listed already - 2112 is one of them - Hemispheres (also by Rush) is also superb.....

...not sure if anyone said it....Tubular Bells - but it has to be on Surround Sound....

Another great mind.  Yes 2112 and Hemispheres and yes Fly by Night, All the Worlds a Stage.

Pink Floyd The Wall. that music is formidable in so many ways.

'k, now i'm thinking ...Bob Dylan Highway 61 Revisited is phenomenal so i can't leave that out.

Jimi Hendrix's Electric Ladyland has some monumental guitar work, especially in All Along The Watchtower. Voodoo Child is good also...

those are three of the greatest of all time IMO.

rebekahELLEposted 14 years agoin reply to this

        yes, these are good too.

really hard to pick just one.

The Wall is really amazing music. Pink Floyd is going to perform the entire album on their next north american tour. that I don't want to miss!

I'm sticking with Abbey Road for best rock album but the Beatles White album is also great music.

the Doors first album, but not the best rock album ever.

Yeah, it's Roger Waters tour, not Pink Floyd. No Gilmore, no Mason and Syd and Rick Wright are dead. Having said that, I'll be trying to get tickets. I've seen Floyd 4 times and Roger and his band in 2000. I've been going to live shows since 1966 and I'm not sure there's a better live band than Pink Floyd, but don't hold me to that :-)

I'd probably have to go with a Dan Fogelberg. Elton John's Yellow Brick Road was great, too, along with Eagles' Greatest Hits. I also like Steely Dan's Can't Buy a Thrill and the Stones' Sticky Fingers. Oh, and Jim Croce's Great Hits. And Jimmy Buffett's.

I must say that I believe the best Rock album of ALL time would have to be:

    The Beatles: WHITE ALBUM. 1969.

    http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/2/20/TheBeatles68LP.jpg/200px-TheBeatles68LP.jpg

It not only contains a variety of melodies, it stands for the close of an era that will never be again.

My own preference, second only to the White Album is:

Led Zeppelin: Houses of the Holy, 1974-75.

How about this number one hit from one of the greatest albums EVER....

Talk to me, tell me your name
You blow me off like it's all the same
You lit a fuse, and now I'm ticking away
    Like a bomb... yeah baby

Talk to me, tell me your sign
You're switchin' sides like a Gemini
    You're playing games
And now you're hittin' my heart
    Like a drum... yeah baby

    Well if Lady Luck
    Gets on my side
We're gonna rock this town alive
I'll let her rough me up
    'Til she knocks me out
'Cause she walks like she talks
And she talks like she walks

    [Chorus:]
    She bangs, she bangs
Oh baby when she moves, she moves
    I go crazy 'cause she
    Looks like a flower
But she stings like a bee
    Like every girl in history

    She bangs, she bangs
I'm wasted by the way she moves
No one ever lokked so fine
    She reminds me
That a woman's got one thing on her mind

Talk to me, tell me the news
You'll wear me out like a pair of shoes
We'll dance all night until the band goes home
    Then you're gone... yeah baby

Well, if it looks like love
    Should be a crime
They better lock me up for life
    I'll do the time
With a smile on my face
    Thinkin' of her in her
    Leather and lace

    [REPEAT CHORUS]

    Man, if Lady Luck
    Gets on my side
We're gonna rock this town alive
I'll let her rough me up
    'Till she knocks me out
'Cause she walks like she talks
And she talks like she walks

The best ROCK album should contain songs that are 100% best. Compilations aside, it's hard to find an album up to that title. There are simply too many superb albums but each of them has at least one track hard to swallow. I'll go with "Please Please Me" (The Beatles).

    The other contenders:
    Help! (The Beatles)
The Velvet Underground & Nico (the minus is the closer)
LA Woman (The Doors / The Crawling Snake is a downer)
Never Mind The Bollocks (Sex Pistols / worn out)
Closer (Joy Division / the minus is the opener)
Bummed (Happy Mondays / the minus is the opener)
    The Stone Roses
You Cross My Path (The Charlatans)
