Which of the 5 senses you wouldn't mind losing?

   Anyway here is the lowdown. Yesterday we had guests over for dinner and they got a wonderful rose bouquet(since my friend knows I love roses). And today morning I got up with a cold and I just couldn't smell the roses. I guess I just complained about not being able to smell the roses and she said "if she ever absolutely had to give up one sense then it would be smell". I guess my question is do you feel out of the 5 senses(i.e., touch, taste, hearing, vision and smell) smell is the least important? I just love the smell of flowers (of course the good part is I don't get to smell my husband's smelly socks)

      I would be very unhappy if I lost any of my senses. I'm a very sensual person.

   I don't want to lose any of the 5 senses.  But if I have to choose, it has to be the sense of smell.  Well, I actually lost it countrywomen due to my chronic sinusitis.  But when I started doing healing work on other people, a wonderful miracle happened.  I got my sense of smell back.  My nose still gets clogged every now and then but I can SMELL!  And I thank God for that everyday.

      Well I wish I could switch on and off some of my senses..LOL. Glad to know your sense of smell is back. I just love flowers and that is a little luxury that I indulge in(having fresh flowers at home).

      HA HA HA HA !!!!!!!!!!! thats awesome....no really, I have thought about this over and over....your sense of smell affects..(or effects? I think Affects) your taste..and its the sense most strongly tied to memories. I would most LEAST give up my sense of smell. So I would have to give up....hearing? not hear my kids laugh? ok..sight..not see my husband's beautifull face?..oh god....I guess, if forced too, I would loose the sense of touch. I love food too much.

      Do you use your sense of smell a lot? I especially use it for cooking and enjoying flowers fragrances.

               Hi CW, yes there are few moments where I feel bad about my smelling sense. I hardly feel cooking gas leakage, for an example. Otherwise, I think my smelling sense is not so bad.

         Totally! I lose all interest in food when I have a cold and cannot smell anything. Even things that would otherwise make me salivate hold no appeal.
         
         Besides smell can be incredibly evocative. There is one aftershave smell that takes be back to age 8 instantly, my first crush.

            Reena- I still remember my dad's old spice after shave. Not necessarily a crush but it still evokes those memories. I am still a little under the weather. It has been raining the whole day here in Seattle. Have a good weekend.

               Hope you feel better soon, countrywomen. The smell of this particular Eu de cologne (it used to be called 'colon' water at home ) still makes me feel as though I or someone else is ill.

      Well sense of smell can have downside. I guess smelly socks and discrete bodily gaseous emissions can be avoided.

         I suppose you are right. once, my 2 year old daughter got into the car and said...eww. it smells like eyelashes in here.
         but I will take the bad with the good.
         fresh cut grass, the wild roses at the ocean, coffee brewing and bacon cooking in the am, clean sleeping babies, lilacs, my husband AFTER a shower.  I like smelling.

         First, I wouldn't mind sleeping through an alarm clock since I would have an excuse.  Plus I have a houseful of kids and it gets awfully noisy.  Technologically, I could compensate somewhat with digital communications and closed captioning.  Finally, learning American Sign Language would keep me mentally active.

    Now wait a minute, eyesight is pretty much worthless had glasses when I was young but now sometimes I think I need glasses on top of my glasses. Hearing is going fast, sometimes it is a blessing, but I really don't like loosing it. Touch can't loose that it might replace sight some day. Smell has always been so keen but it is not that useful, you get to smell things you really don't want to. Taste God gave it to us because of chocolate, CAN'T LOSE THAT. There I found the one I would mind loosing. Ask anyone who is missing just one sense and they will tell you it was pretty important. Keep them as long as you can.

    Couldn't lose sense of smell - lilacs, fresh brewed coffee, my newly blooming peonies...
    And that would mean less tasting - no more salty-sweet beach-browned baby kisses, no more luscious berries, no more chocolate...Couldn't have that
    Couldn't lose bird song, babies coos and gurgles, children's laughter, or glorious music...
    Not to glory in the sun-kissed mountains at daybreak, the storm-tossed lake, the sunset over the Pacific, an sun-dappled afternoon under my apple tree...? No can do.
    Never to feel a lover's caress, to snuggle a softly sleeping infant (need all 5 for that one alone), sorry guys...
    I'm all for losing my sixth sense, too, lol. Rather see live people.

    Maybe smell and taste are connected but I had a medical problem a few months ago with my sense of taste and can tell you that my sense of smell was not affected (which made it worse!)
    Just imagine smelling food and feeling hungry but whatever you put in your mouth is tasteless, you can't feel a difference if you are eating an apple or a potato or a piece of chocholate. I lost weight very fast and even had to force myself to drink water (believe me - water has a lot of taste but you don't appreciate it until you loose it).
    It lasted only about two weeks and came back slowly but I learned alot from that experience, I don't even want to imagine my life if I lost any of my senses permanently.

    i have a long time girlfriend so it would deffinatly be hearing,yes,deffinatly hearing,in fact,i have an ice pick up to my ear as we speak.if i could choose for her,it would be(you guessed it)speach.i know speach is not one of the senses but i'm getting desperate!

    Great question, countrywomen!!! I have a cousin who lost her sense of smell, and she can't taste anything. I don't think I would enjoy that at all. I do love to eat...chocolate!
    I'm legally blind without my contacts, so I wear them 24/7. My mom cannot sense heat in her hands very well, and has burned herself cooking more than once. So now that you know we belong in a circus, I'll tell you something positive. I am involved with the deaf community and have studied and experienced deaf culture, and would be very comfortable communicating solely by signing. I would miss the sound of my children laughing, and the hubby would have to revert to writing everything he had to say, but if I had to choose, that would be my pick.

       Oh, it's not as bad as it sounds.  It actually doesn't take much to be legally blind without correction.  I can see without my contacts, but mostly just great big blurs of colors and shapes.  Oddly enough, my opthamologist is stumpped because occasionally, I will have perfectly clear vision in one eye without anything.  It goes away after a few hours.  I told you I was weird.

          Btw as lxxy says Lasik is a one time procedure and if insurance covers it then it is great. I have a work colleague who highly recommends it.
          And I am not sure what it takes to be "legally blind" and does it allow us to get the handicapped tag. Today when we went to Costco we just couldn't get parking and only the handicapped spots were available. I know I shouldn't be complaining but hey we spent 15 minutes just circling the parking lot.

    Hey, I think I could do without smell, only because my two year old sure knows how to bring tears to my eyes, playing with his poop and all... eew right? Well, I'll just be glad when he's completely potty trained! LOL

    Aren't smell and taste linked? So if you lost one you would probably lose the other! But if I could just lose smell without losing taste then I would probably go for that!

    I would say taste because as long as I eat I know I'm full. I was going with smell until I realized that I need to smell smoke and gas to know if I'm in harms way.
