Castaway Island, Minecraft Survival Map
Ever since the original 'Survival Island' map came out, people have been yearning to transform a desert island into a mature and civilized place to live. The original map has faded into myth, but there have been many imitators since. Very few of them have hit the right balance of imitation and innovation needed to woo large numbers of players, but Castaway Island has discovered the formula and is, in my opinion, the best survival island map since the original Survival Island.
Why do I say that?
Castaway Island has some serious landscaping and is entirely gorgeous, which the original survival island map wasn't particularly.
Castaway Island is mostly sand at the outset and it will be up to you to gather the necessary soil to farm and spawn animals. This I approve of heartily as setting up farms and 'earning' the ability to spawn animals was one of my favorite aspects of the original map. If you've downloaded the 1.9 pre-releases, you'll be able to breed the animals that spawn, creating farms that stretch far into the ocean.
Castaway Island rewards exploration. You're stuck on a desert island, but there's a galleon out there in those waters, if only you can find it. The original survival island simply relied upon your own naïve sense of play to keep you interested in the game, whereas Castaway island has hidden structures to explore and over thirty challenges for those of us who are goal oriented completionists who feel lost without some objective hanging over our heads like the sword of Damocles.
Castaway Island features a multiplayer map, designed with the multiple player experience in mind. Play on a server and take turns climbing palm trees with your friends!
Castaway Island has palm trees. Any place that has palm trees is better than a place that doesn't. We know this because of science.
Castaway Island starts with a bang. I won't spoil it for you, but you'll just have to trust me when I say that the opening of Castaway Island is the best survival map opening of all time. In fact, it's probably one of the only openings given that most maps just start with you on a beach somewhere reading signs.
Castaway Island has an expansion pack. Really. If you've played through the basic map, there's a new one that acts as an expansion, preserving some shelter but paving the way for new exploration and adventures.
This map is going to appeal both to people who like carving their existence out of the soil and those who enjoy exploration. Because it's been generated from a natural map, all the resources you need lie under the sandy soils, which in my opinion, is a much better and more natural approach to minecraft survival maps. You're not limited to the blocks that the creator decides to allocate you, or to a limited amount of resources. So why not play this map, master the oceans and prove yourself worthy of survival!
