10 Good Board Games for Adults and Kids Under $20 in 2016

Updated on March 24, 2016

We love board games at our house. Still, it's nice when you can find them at a reasonable price and still have lots of fun. So, here's a list of good board games for families that cost right under $20.

I chose these specific games because:

  • They are under $20
  • I have played them myself and they are guaranteed winners

In other words, if you buy one of these board games you are guaranteed a good time. If you don't find what you are looking for here please check out my best rated board games for kids article.

1. Boxers Or Briefs? (Adults)

Here is a great board game idea for an adult party.

Boxers Or Briefs has more than 2,000 unique and funny phrases designed to make other players reveal things about themselves. It's basically designed to make you laugh so hard you will cry. Amazon reviewers have warned people not to drink milk before reading a card as it will "come out of your nose".

When "Boxers Or Briefs?" was briefly discontinued in 2008 people were listing it on ebay for well over $200 and retail it went for $50.

You can get it at Amazon right now for only $16.00

This easy to learn game is for 4-10 players. I would recommend it for ages 16+

2. Blokus (Adults & Kids)

With 500 reviews on amazon at an average of 5 Stars you can't question the fun of Blokus. In 2003 it received Europe's game of the year and professional tournaments have been held around the globe.

Having received a mensa award for promoting healthy brain activity Blokus forces players to think outside of the box.

How to Play

The goal of the game is to try to fit all of your pieces onto the board while blocking others from playing their pieces. While building on your own pieces you map out territory and block others from playing their pieces thus allowing you to play more of your own.

3. Apples to Apples (Adults & Kids)

Apples to Apples has been a family favorite of mine for years. After you deal the cards the judge pulls out a card that could anything from a person, place, thing or an event. It is their job to figure out who picked the card that best associates with the card they chose. The judge can decide to pick on whoever's card was witty, stupid, or just right on track. The best part of all is that everyone gets a chance to be the judge!

4. Jenga (Adults & Kids)

I still remember the commercials from when Jenga first came out...

Jenga... Jenga... Jenga... *splat* The whole tower falls over.

This game is perfect for the whole family and anyone can win - even my 5 year old at times!

Smart Ass (Adults)

This game of Who, What, and Where am I questions allows users to yell out an answer even when it's not their turn. These aren't brain draining questions so thus even a "dumb ass" can win. Every Who, What, and Where am I card has ten clues and the first person to yell out the answer to the card moves ahead.

Perfect for your next party.

My wife and I have hosted several parties and begun with this game. It is a crackup! You choose an animal and a sound associated with that animal (woof, bark, etc..) and when a matching card comes up you have to do the other person's animal sound. Cards are continually turned over so this fast-paced game never gets dull!
I will say that despite the name this game is a little bit difficult for kids under 10!
