10 Cool Optical Illusions, Includes Train Tracks

Updated on January 2, 2017

I often get lost on a tangent while surfing the web. Here are a few cool things I've found.

1. The Black Dot

Stare at the black dot, and the grey haze will shrink and disappear.

2. Are the dots black or white?

I can't tell.

3. The bulging squares

This grid appears to bulge outwards, but it's made up entirely of perfect squares.

4. Cultural Illusion

This one is really interesting. To someone from a developed country who is used to being indoors, this picture shows a family sitting in the corner of a room with a window leading outside. To someone from a less developed African country, the corner of the room looks like a tree and the window appears to be an object balanced on the woman's head.

5. Fish or Girl?

Is this a plate with a fish on it, or a girl winking at you?

6. Man or Mermaid?

Is this a man with a moustache or a mermaid at the bottom of the ocean?

7. Fraser Spiral

This was developed by psychologist James Fraser in 1908. It appears to be a spiral pattern, but follow one of them with your mouse and you will find that the spirals are actually cocentric circles. The background gives the illusion that the circles are spiraled.

8. Striped Circles

Stare at the dot in the center of these two rings and they will appear to be rotating.

9. Mirror Carrying

This man is carrying a mirror on his shoulder with the reflective side toward the camera. Looks like he has no head.

10. Train Tracks

Which horizontal bar in longer? The top one appears to be longer, but they are actually the same length. The image of the tracks disappearing in the distance leads your brain to believe that the object that is further away is larger than the one close by.

Yea, I love them. I think my favorite is the cultural illusion of the family sitting together. Thanks for the comment.
