10 Gorgeous Games Like Tera: Best Action Games You Should Play

Rahul is a video game addict, who can't get enough of RPGs. His all-time favorite games are The Witcher and The Elder Scrolls series.

Tera
Tera

Tera is a Korean 3D action MMORPG with a real-time combat system. There is no auto-targeting here. Unless your blows connect, you are not going to do any damage. Gone those days when you could just stand there, mash random buttons, hoping that you'd emerge a victor. Tera has brought something new and engaging on the table. It will be hard for you to go back to auto-targeting once you play it.

Being a fan of Tera, I have tried other MMORPGs and single player games with similar combat system to find some similar games. If you are looking for some great games like Tera, I am sure you are going to like most, if not all, of the games on this list.

How would you rate Tera out of 5 stars?

Dark Souls 2

Dark Souls 2 is the sequel to the legendarily difficult original game developed by From Software and published by Bandai Namco.

Rumors were rife that they are going to tone down the difficulty to make it more accessible to a larger audience waiting to get into this game. Of course, all of these rumors were just rumors as I managed to die more than 10 times in my first 30 minutes in Dark Souls 2.

There is a very little room for mistakes. Don’t sway out of your enemy’s way and you’ll be crushed. There is no second chance. If you are down, you are likely to stay down.

One thing is sure though – Your defeat is going to frustrate you a lot. Sometimes you feel like they are being unfair to you and throw down your controller in anger only to pick it back up minutes later hoping to give it back to that hideous creature. That’s the beauty of Dark Souls 2. It humiliates you right from the beginning, yet you refuse to give up.

If you had doubts that Dark Souls 2 won’t be as difficult and skin-twitching as the original, it’s time to cast aside your doubts and get ready to play one of the most difficult games ever. Granted, it’s unfair to you sometimes, but the steep luring curve is rewarding one you get the hang of it.

Dark Souls 2 is definitely one of the best single player games like Tera. There are dungeons to explore, souls to collects and burly creatures to fight. What’s not to like?

C9 - A 3D Action MMORPG Game Like Tera

C9 is also known as Continent Of The 9th Seal. It’s a 3d action MMORPG with amazing graphics, an engaging combat system and hundreds of fascinating quests.

There are 3 classes in this game – Hunter, Shaman and Fighter with each class having its own set of unique combos and powers. I felt that the combat system is a lot in line with Tera.

You can’t rest your hands during the fight as there is no auto-attack system here. You’ll have to aim your attacks in order to do damage. As you level up your characters, the combat gets more dynamic as you get access to more combos.

C9 is not an easy game. If you have played other MMORPGs and expect C9 to be the same, you are in for a surprise. Your enemies are going to give it back to you every time you invade their area. There is a sense of immense satisfaction in conquering each and every one of these hideous creatures.

Although there are more than 2000 quests on offer, you don’t need to do even a single one of them to play C9. If you want to level up faster, though, you should do them. Besides, they are surprisingly good!

Black Desert Online - One Of The Best Action Games Like Tera

Have you ever wished for MMORPGS to look like their single player counterparts? I for one have been longing for a good MMORPG that can give single player games a run for their money. Black Desert Online, a free-to-play Korean MMORPG, certainly has what it takes to be one of the best MMORPGs of all time.

It features a gorgeous large scale world free for you to explore with hundreds of monsters to defeat, castles to siege, and dungeons to raid. What’s not to like?

The real hook of Black Desert Online is its unprecedented action-oriented combat system. You can see the impact and damage of each and every blow of yours. A heavy strike, for example, may stun your enemy for couple of seconds, giving you an opportunity to put him down while he is trying to shake it off.

You can also buy properties in the city and customize them the way you like. Unfortunately, there is no such option in the open world. However, there is still an option to rent temporarily.

All in all, it’s a beautiful game. You shouldn’t miss out on it. If you live outside South Korea, though, you will wait for a year or two as Black Desert Online is scheduled for a western release sometime in 2016.

Vindictus - A Korean Free To Play MMORPG

Vindictus is one of the very first MMORPG that embraced the real-time combat system. They took an uncertain path at the time when everyone was focusing on replicating the success of WoW. Vindictus started the revolution that changed the way we play MMORPGs. It’s the reason why we have countless action-oriented games like Tera and Black Desert now. Credit must be given where it’s due!

Developed by DevCAT and published by Nexon, Vindictus is an action packed MMORPG featuring thousands of quests in form of episodic releases. They release a new episode very six months, so you’d never run out of things to do here.

Vindictus features an engaging and satisfying real-time combat system. You can grab your enemies by their collar and throw them against a wall (my personal favorite) or just hack them till death.

The combat system works really well with destructible environments. Walls crumble and buildings fall down when you go frenzy. Your armor also breaks if it takes too much damage, leaving you in your undergarments.

Although you can go solo if you are a lone wolf, Vindictus is fun to play with friends. Party play is a necessity for most of the places though. For example, you will need your friend to distract the giant spider while you try to lock him up. Tackling these huge monsters with party members is hella fun.

If you are looking for some action-oriented games like Tera, Vindictus is definitely the best one around.

Dungeons & Dragons Online

Dungeons & Dragons Online is a 3D action-MMORPG developed by Turbine. Initially launched as a subscription based game, they switched to free-to-play model pretty soon. You can still subscribe to the game to get access to some exclusive features.

DDO puts you in battles with full control over your special attacks and character’s movement. While the combat is action-oriented, it’s nowhere near like Tera. There are some real-time strategy elements into this system.

A deep character customization system ensures that you have your own unique identity as a player. The world is gorgeous and massive with tons of quests to do and puzzles to solve. What’s not to like here?

Neverwinter Online

Developed by Cryptic Studios, Neverwinter is a 3D action MMORPG based on the Dungeons and Dragons Universe. You are put in the shoes of one of the heroes of the city who is set out to finish those who conspire to see the lands of Neverwinter destroyed.

You’d be disappointed if you expect a lot from the lore as it’s pretty much in line with other MMORPGs. Neverwinter more than makes up for its dismaying story with its colorful world and an engaging combat system though.

You begin your journey by choosing from one of the twelve available races- Human, Drow, Dwarf, Half-Elf, Half-Orc, Halfing, Menzoberranzan Renegade, Moon Elf, Sun Elf, Wood Elf and Dragonborn, with each one having a unique lore filled background. The number of choices are a bit overwhelming!

If you are a creative player, you can design your own quests and share them with others. Similarly, you can try countless user-created quests for fun. Granted, some of them offer nothing good, but you’d surprised to see how good most of the quests turn out to be.

If you are looking for some games like Tera that are set in Dungeons & Dragons universe, you would definitely like what Neverwinter has to offer.

Dragon Nest

Dragon Next is a real-time combat MMORPG developed by Eyedentity Games and published by Nexon. You play as a hero who is on a quest to find an antidote to save the poisoned goddess Altea. The treacherous path to antidote is teeming with maniacs, deadly dragons and other countless threats. Do you have what it takes to protect the lands and save the goddess?

You will have to choose from the four classes – Warrior, Cleric, Archer and Sorcerer, before embarking upon your journey. Each of these classes has unique abilities and perks, which will significantly change your combat tactics. While the Warrior relies more on his sword, Cleric is an expert in melee fights. Choose Sorcerer or Archer if you prefer long range combat.

Dragon Nest is one of the best anime inspired games like Tera as it features a similar unforgiving combat system where you will have to aim each strike to do damage. Auto targeting is quickly becoming a thing of past now. Using a small cursor, you will line up your arrows, fists and fireballs to decimate your enemies.

Dragon Nest might look like a game with low production values in the first glance, but when you get your hands on it, you realize that you were totally wrong about it. While you will be doing a lot of quests repeatedly, things will never get boring as you’ll always be inclined to try the new combo on your enemies to see how quickly they fall this time around.

If you are not the type of person who likes repeating the same quests, you could always put your fighting abilities to test in Dragon Nest’s skill based PvP arenas, which features up to 16 players. You don’t have to worry about being overpowered or under-powered as you will only be pitted against similarly skilled players.

Blade & Soul

Blade & Soul is a Korean Martial Arts fantasy MMORPG developed and published by NCsoft. Although they announced that a western version will release soon, there is still no sign of it. Rest assured, it’s still on the way.

Blade & Soul combines a martial arts inspired combat with Quing Gong which makes for a really engaging gameplay that never gets boring. I am not exaggerating when I say that it’s the best combat system I have ever seen in a MMORPG. Although, I am yet to get my hands on this game, I have seen it in action. Just have a look at the gameplay footage I have embedded here. Isn’t it the prettiest game ever?

Lords Of The Fallen
Lords Of The Fallen

Lords Of The Fallen - One Of The Best Hardcore Games Like Tera

Forty-five minutes passed in Lords of the Fallen before I died for the first time. That's a bit of a surprise for a game that has made no secret in professing its love for the ultra-punishing Dark Souls series.

Don’t mistake it for an easy game though - not by a long shot. You will be dodging, parrying, and slashing all the way through your journey in Lords Of The Fallen. The game is designed for hardcore player while making it easier for casual plays to get into it.

Granted, it struggles to maintain the balance between accessibility and hardcoreness on many occasions, its arcady combat mechanics with a tempting risk and reward system more than makes up for it.

You play as Harkyn, a criminal who’s has been released from the bars to do a job that no one else can do – saving the world from creatures called Rhogars. They never mention the nature of his crimes, and I didn’t care to be honest. A bland, emotionless story makes it hard for anyone to care about Harkyn’s fate.

Don’t let the mediocre story stop you from playing on of the best RPGs of 2014 though. Lords of the Fallen packs some solid punches where it matters.

If you are looking for some single-player games like Tera, you should definitely try The Lords Of The Fallen.
