5 of the Top Roleplaying Games for PC released in 2014

Updated on January 13, 2015

Roleplaying games

Roleplaying games have come a really long way since the first RPG games, which was either based on a table-top board game, or a text-based game running on the command line or terminal. In these earlier text-based roleplaying games, you were given a story and would interact with the game and characters by selecting from a list of actions presented to you based on the current situation and position in the game, then the game story would change based on your selections.

We've come a really long way since these text-based roleplaying games, and can now control our characters in a three-dimension world and interact with other characters and the game world through advance visual graphics. The latest roleplaying games each offers different types of controls, visuals, movement systems and fighting styles to make your gameplay experience unique and challenging with each new game you play.

Types of Roleplaying Games

More and more roleplaying games are released nowadays, expanding the roleplaying game series with more genres and adding new twists and features to roleplaying games to create unique and entertaining games that doesn't just repeat everything you've played in a previous roleplaying game.

Before moving to the top roleplaying games released for PC during 2014, let's first have a look at the different types of roleplaying games available today.

Types of Roleplaying Games

Genre
Details
Example
JRPG (Japanese Style RPG)
JRPGs usually refers to the console-style rpg games which involves a diverse storyline, a level-up system and a turn-based battle system.
Final Fantasy Series, Persona Series
Strategy RPG
a Strategy RPG usually involves a turn-based movement system combined with the battle system. The movement system can be compared to other strategy games like chess, where each character can only move a certain amount of steps or blocks per turn. Strategy RPG games are also sometimes called Tactical RPG games.
Final Fantasy Tactics, Valkyria Chronicles
Western Style RPG
Western Style RPGs, also sometimes referred to as PC Style RPGs, usually features different styles of levelling up and allows you to create more powerful characters by equipping them with a variety of items including swords, armor, shields and more. These equipped items can then usually be seen live as you equip them on your character.
Mass Effect Series, Dragon Age Series, Elder Scrolls Series
Dungeon Crawler
a Dungeon crawler usually involves fighting through a large number of enemies quickly, with the objective of moving forward in the game while collecting loot and items, and levelling your character or team up through different methods including experience and equipment.
Diablo Series, Magicka Series
Action RPG
Action RPG games are my favourite type of RPG games available, because they usually involve a lot more action than the other genres of roleplaying games. In Action RPG games, you take the role of a character, or sometimes even a team, and do the fighting yourself. Equip your characters with items, level them by gaining experience from fighting and unlock special powers and magic to make fighting more challenging and fun.
Tales of Symphonia, Kingdom Hearts Series
Rogue-Like RPG
Rogue-Like RPGs are quite old, but there's some games incorporating these features in newly released RPG titles. In a rogue-like RPG, the game usually plays off in a dungeon-like environment and features a turn-based movement system with a tiled system and sprite-based graphics. Levels are also usually randomly generated.
Rogue, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon
MMORPG
MMORPG, or Massively Multiplayer Online Roleplaying Game, is a genre of roleplaying games played online with other people from around the world. The player usually gets to customize their character when they first start to play, and can then build up their character, gaining experience and items while fulfilling quests and helping friends progress through the game.
World of Warcraft, Guild Wars

South Park: The Stick of Truth

South Park: The Stick of Truth is a very creative, original roleplaying game based on the adult-themed cartoon series, South Park. The game features a unique turn-based fighting system that involves a lot of user activity in order to perform actions against other characters during a fight.

You play the role of "The New Kid", a kid who just moved to South Park, Colorado. You became involved in an epic fantasy battle between humans, wizards and elves. The game later turns to go out of control when nazi zombies and gnomes make an appearance, putting the entire town in jeopardy.

Although South Park: The Stick of Truth contains some violent and gruesome scenes, the game features a creative and unique battle system, combined with 2.5D graphics that looks just like the TV show - you'll feel like you're in control of the actual South Park series!
