1960s Barbie Doll House

Updated on October 17, 2014

My 1962 Christmas Dream Gift - Barbie Dream House

The Barbie Doll House was brought out in 1962 by Mattel. This is the first house Barbie had since her debut in 1959. It was made totally from cardboard and folded out from the box. Mattel called it "Barbie's Dream House."

The house was one large studio apartment style room complete with furniture. All the furniture, fixtures and fittings were also made from cardboard.

As this was the first ever Barbie doll house it was every little girls dream to own one. Only the most fortunate of children would have got their hands on the 1960s Barbie Doll House.

I was just THAT lucky - I received a Barbie Dream House for Christmas 1962. I can't even imagine all the time it took my mother to put all that cardboard furniture together. Thanks Mom!

What Came With Your 1962 Barbie Dream House?

Barbie's Dream House included a bed with bedside, sofa, coffee table, side chair with footstool and a sideboard. There were also cardboard rugs and pictures.

A chest of draws, wardrobe and bookcase with cupboards were built into the back wall of the doll house. These could not be opened and were just for show. The whole house could be folded up back into a box with a carry handle so you could take it with you anywhere.

I didn't have one, in fact I didn't even have Barbie, all I had was Midge. My best friend had one though, and that was almost as good. She also had Barbie, Ken and Skipper.

I built one [out of wood] for my granddaughter when she was 3 years old and very much into Barbies. It took me about a month to build it!!!!! Then I had to build the furniture too. The doll house "industry" scale is 1 to 12. To build to Barbie scale I needed to make my house 1 to 6. It was big!

I was too old for the Barbie craze but my daughter sure did enjoy her barbie camper and a doll house I had saved from my youth. Angel blessings for the memories.

How cool. We never had an official Dream House, but I remember building a lot of doll furniture for my sister's Barbie... and that she complained my efforts looked tacky because I used too much Scotch tape!

Wow, Barbie has sure come a long way hasn't she? I was a little too young to get that first dream house but many many Barbie things came to me shortly after that year.
