Two Player Board Games
Most of the popular board games are designed for three or more players. The reason for this is not that games designers underestimate the need for two player games. Its rather that it's much harder to design a fun, meaningful game for just two persons.
Fortunately some clever players invent ways to modify some of the best board games to suit two players, and some of these are quite successful. Other again are not that successful. Have you ever tried to play Cluedo with just two players? It gets boring and easy very fast.
In this lens I look at some of the best selling games that are invented for just two players. Here you have to bend the rules to be able to play more than one opponent.
Gloom for a good time?
The objective in this card game is not the traditional more money or more points, but the exact opposite. The Goal is to make your game family to be as miserable as possible before they die. This might not sound as something you would elect to use a free night on, but it's actually a blast, and even better if you can let your imagination fly.
A popular trend in game design today is to make extensions. Gloom is not exception and especially if you plan to play this with more than 2 players, some of the extensions are recommended. Of course the extensions follow the theme of the game and have names like "Unhappy Homes", "Uninvited Guests" and "Unfortunate Expeditions".
Board games or not?
Most gamers play the majority of games on a computer or a console, but what would you prefer if you could choose?

2 Player Card Games
Settlers of Catan is one of the most successful board games in the world. At least if you don't count the classic like chess, backgammon, etc and monopoly.
The drawback with this game, as so many others is that it requires 3 persons. Luckily for all Settlers of Catan lovers out there, Mayfair games have made Catan into a 2 player card game, called The Rivals For Catan. In true Catan style there are expansions so you never have to play the same game twice.
2 Player Strategy Games
Chess is the ultimate 2 Player Strategy Game. Some even play this game professionally and are consider some of the smartest people in the world. To master the games of chess you need to know the basics, but also be able to foresee all the possible variations you opponent may or may not consider and make the best counter move, before the opponent knows what he is about to do. This game takes a few minutes to learn, but a lifetime to master.
Chess boards comes in many different shapes and form, well not really. They come in many different materials and with different detail level. If you are looking for a chess board you can spend as little or much as you want.

I just love strategy games, on the PC and as board games. Risk and C&C are great, but they take so much time. Because of this “Settlers of Catan” is my go-to board game.
