9 Games Like Rust: Survival Adventure Games You Should Play
How would you rate Rust out of 5 stars?
Games Like Rust
One of the main reasons I love gaming on PC is loads of amazing indie games that are exclusively available on my favorate platform. One of those is Rust, a survival horror multiplayer shooter which has gained a lot of popularity recently.
Developed and published by Facepunch Studios, Rust was originally designed to be a zombie survival shooter, but they removed zombies from the game after receiving some feedback on their forums.
Rust remains popular even after being stripped off zombies since it was never about zombie and mutants. It was all about crafting and exploration from the outset. That’s what sets it apart from a long list of other survival horror games and makes it worth investing some time in. A lot of gamers are looking for other games like Rust though as they want to try something new. I have listed a few of them here.
Dayz - A Survival Horror Multiplayer Game Like Rust
Dayz’s post-apocalyptic world is a cruel one. Merely minutes after spawning into the world for the first time, I found myself being chased around by hoards of zombies and was slapped to death as I failed to distract them. Dayz is all about surviving for as long as possible in the gruesome world by finding a shelter, scrounging for weapons, foods and other supplies while keeping an eye out for zombies and hostile players. Remember the rule; don’t trust anyone. Even the friendliest of players who talk sweet, may lead you into a trap where his other friends would strip you off all your gears and put a bullet in your head. If you are lucky, they might let you live or take you as a hostage.
Your only job here is to survive for as long as possible as there are no other objectives. The permadeath system works like a double-edged sword here. It gives you a sense of realism and immersion while making you care about your character. You'll lose everything you have scavenged if you die. On the other hand, it can be infuriating to go back to square one once again and start from the scratch. I know it’s quite bleak, but that’s why so many gamers love Dayz.
There are no Health and stamina bars here, so you'd have to rely on little nags like “I am feeling unwell” or “I need to eat something”, to know when you need to feed or heal your characters. The lack of HUD is what makes Dayz a great survival sim as there are no barriers between you and the world.
Despite being a zombie-apocalypse game, there are not a lot of zombies in Dayz. It’s possible to go more than an hour without seeing any. They are not the only threat you should be afraid of though. The real threat are other players that are always preying on you. While I found a lot of friendly players during my journey, there were quite a few hostile players who didn't hesitate to shoot me on sight. You see, zombies can be fooled, but players can’t. They will hunt you down like a pack of wolves. When you struggle to find cover to save your life in these tense situations, you realize that this game is designed for moments like this.
7 Days To Die - One Of The Best Indie Survival Game Like Rust
7 days to Die has joined the ranks of other zombie survival games like Rust and DayZ with its unique take on the post-apocalyptic world. You will spawn at random locations in a fixed map with a job to survive as long as you can while hoards of zombies come looking to get a taste of your flesh. You must survive the onslaughts by scavenging for foods and resources and fortifying your shelter.
Unlike most of the survival games, the map is not procedurally generated – it’s fixed. So over time, you can get a good idea as to where to look for some supplies. The loot, however, is randomized. It means that there is no certainty that you’ll find what you are looking for. For example, if you found a bag full of weapons and ammos last time around, you might as well struggle to find even bullets the very next time.
Things get tougher as the night approaches when these fumbling zombies become predators all of a sudden. It’s around that time you'd wish you had found a good shelter. If you are still strolling around carelessly as night approaches, though, your character is not going to live to see the next day. Hiding behind closed doors doesn't help either as zombies with break through those without much hassle. I found it pretty difficult to survive though the whole night even when I had a fortified shelter with some weapons at my disposal. It’s certainly going to test your survival skills.
Combat mechanics are still in early stages, but they work. It’s pretty basic though. It still boasts some good melee and shooting mechanics. Depending upon the difficulty level you set, 7 Days to Die would be a piece of cake or a nightmare. On ‘Easy’ settings, you won’t find it challenging. If you want a good challenging gameplay, you should crank it up all the way to the highest difficulty.
Nether - A Fast-Paced Survival Horror Game
Nether takes place a few days after an apocalyptic event has taken place turning most of the human beings into mutants known as Nethers. The remaining humans must try to keep these flesh eaters as far away as possible.
Your best chance to survive is to avoid Nethers. These relentless mutants would rip you apart in seconds if you dare go one on one with them. Apart from Nethers, there are other survivors who may join you in your journey or shoot you on sight for no apparent reason. These random and unpredictable encounters make for a really fast-paced and addictive gameplay that will keep you hooked for days.
Guns and ammos are scarce. While there is a solid melee combat to make up for that, you can’t expect to come out unscathed when these wild beasts beset upon you. If you want to live long enough, avoid combat scenarios as much as possible.
I must admit that I didn’t follow these rules as shooting is just too good to miss out on. If you have played some first person shooters, you’d instantly feel home here as the shooting mechanics are designed keeping fast and fluid action in mind. Don’t rely too much on your guns though. A few bullets won’t be enough for hundreds of these skinny pricks.
Just like Rust, Nether is in pretty early stages right now, so expect to run across a few annoying bugs. They won’t ruin your experience though.
Infestation: Survivor Stories – One Of The Survival Games Like Rust
Initially called WarZ, the name was changed to Infestation: Survivor Stories due to its close resemblance to Dayz, another similar multiplayer survival game. Inspired by the success of games like Rust and Dayz, Infestation offers nothing special than other zombie survival games.
Your job is to survive in a post-apocalyptic world teeming with zombies and hostile players. You must continue your search for life-saving times scattered throughout the wasteland. Don’t expect to live peacefully with other players, though, as more than 99% of them will kill you instantly. I was being shot most of the times I came across another players. There are some veteran players who know where spawning spots are, so they'd wait there for other players and shoot them the moment they spawn. It’s cruel and infuriating. Unfortunately, Hammerpoint Studios has done little to fix this problem. It’s unlikely that they will fix that in future if they haven't paid attention to it till now.
There seems to be only one way to stop this humiliation. If you want to be the one to dictate terms and boss around a bit, micro-transactions are the only way to go. Spend some of your hard-earned money in this game and you may live a bit longer as you’d have access to more superior weapons and gears than those who didn’t choose to pay. The hunted suddenly becomes a hunter after spending some cash. Once you die, which is inavitable, you lose everything you purchased with real-world cash. You will need to spend some more to get those superior gears and weapons again. It's ridiculous!
If you want to get those gears without spending a dime, you can theoretically do so. However, it’s nearly impossible to get most of them. These superior items can only be found around cities and villages. Even if you manage to sneak past zombies, you won’t survive the ambush by other players looking to shoot those who come looking for supplies in cities. I had to give up on trying getting a sniper rifle after being killed 3 times in succession. It was just not worth the time.
Hacking is another big problem Infestation is yet to sort out. It’s not a surprise to come across invincible players every now and then. Apparently, players have come to terms with the fact that this game has a lot of hackers and Hammerpoint won't do much about it.
If you want to avoid hackers, choose an unpopulated server. But that’s when you realize that there isn't much to do in Infestation. There is no good reason to wander around the huge map without much to do. The only thing which is really fun about it is a huge world with some really pretty scenery. Yes, it’s a tactical disaster, but it’s fun if you overlook what's going wrong for this game. Just don’t go in expecting too much and you won't be disappointed.
Sir , You Are Being Hunted - An Indie Survival Game
Sir, You Are Being Hunted is one of the best indie games of 2014. With its high production value and some solid stealth based gameplay despite being a low-budget game, it has won so many hearts and awards.
While most survival games are about finding the predictable pattern of your enemies and exploiting it till the end, Sir, you are Being Hunted's revolutionary AI ensures that there are no predictable patterns. These robots petrol the island randomly and change their tactics frequently, which will always keep you on your toes as you never know when your position may be compromised. Survival depends on how quickly you adapt to the dynamic events.
The game takes place on an island taken over by manic robots who have murdered all the humans living on that planet. Your job is to get out of the island as soon as possible by performing several increasingly difficult quests . You are fragile and alone with not much help out here, so you must use game’s advanced stealth mechanics to your advantage as going Rambo style would mean an agonizing death.
There are weapons, gears and food to scavenge throughout the island, but it’s not guaranteed that you will find what you need and when you need it. Good luck with that! Even if you find a lot of resources at once, you won’t be able to carry around much as inventory space is pretty limited. So you’ll have to choose wisely between the items.
It’s pretty difficult to survive out there if you don't have any weapon. Once you manage to find yourself a good gun, though, you will be hunting down your foes one by one. The hunted suddenly becomes a hunter! However, you still need to be careful as getting too complacent is the last thing you need to get out of the island in one piece. Even one bullet wound can make you bleed out if you are not careful.
Overall, Sir, You Are Being Hunted is a fresh take on survival horror genre with an unscripted and light-hearted approach. Its keeps things challenging while being darkly comical at the same time. If you like hardcore games like Rust, Sir, you Are Being Hunted should be right up your alley.
State of Decay
While Rust is a multiplayer engine, State Of Decay is totally a single player game. It doesn't mean that State Of Decay is not fun. In fact, I would say that it’s one of the best games like Rust right now as both of these games have the same main goal – To survive in a world taken over by zombies.
What so many people ignore about State of Decay is its depth, which is a bit surprising. If you'd delve deep, you'd find it’s much more than a zombie survival game. The role playing elements are actually pretty solid with a good leveling and character management system. In your journey, you'd interact with a lot of other NPCs and survivors. And if you want, you can recruit them to help you out with your missions. I spent most of my time bashing skulls and searching different houses and vacated shops for some supplies with my group.
While it’s certainly fun to shoot and stomp the undead, the world is filled with a lot of other activities you can take on. In my 15 hours playthrough, I consumed most of what State Of Decay has to offer, but I could do more if I wanted as there were still quite a few missions I didn’t complete. You can’t ask for more than that for something as little as $20.
Here is some more good news; they are already working on Class4, a bigger and better game that State of Decay, and it’s going to be a full multiplayer experience just like Rust. Good days are ahead!
Dead Island series – A Melee Focused Open-World Games Like Rust
Dead Island series takes place on one of the islands of Papua New Guinea where people have started getting sick and dying all of a sudden. The twist, of course, is that they come back as undead. There is not much excitement about the story as it remains pretty much in line with other zombie apocalypse games. Apart from a less that stellar storyline, though, everything else is top notch. The world is rife with hundreds of quests to take on, locations to explore and people to save. What’s not to like here?
You melee fighting skills would determine how long you'd go without being bitten as most of the game is about using melee weapons to protect yourself. Yes, there are guns, but they are nowhere near as fun as swinging a baseball bat to finish off these rotten crawlers. If it’s not enough fun, add some spikes to it to make your swings more devastating. The customization options are almost overwhelming! You are certainly going to spend a considerable amount of time trying to make some weird combinations happen.
Left 4 Dead Series
Left 4 Dead series is all about taking on hordes of zombies with your friends. You can go solo if you want to, but it wouldn't be anywhere near the fun you'd have playing with your friends.
Unlike the shuffling zombies you see in other games, these zombies will make you run for your life. You and you team needs to trust each other, communicate and help out each other to be able shoot your way out to the end of the map. With its slick combat mechanics, a fast paced gameplay and some truly shuddering horror elements, Left 4 Dead series definitely deserves a chance if you are looking for some games like Rust.
Dying Light - One Of The Best Parkour Focused Games Like Rust
We normally think of zombies as mindless strolling creatures that are too slow for their own good. They can’t run or climb over anything. You are pretty much safe as long as you keep yourself away from these flesh-eating creatures. What if the tides are turned? What if you are slow and they hunt you down in large groups?
That would certainly be hella fun! Dying Light certainly seems to be heading into the above direction. They want to change how we perceive and interact with zombies.
You can go all guns blazing on these poor zombies in broad daylight. As dawn approaches, though, you need to pack things up and run for the shelter. If you still find yourself out in the open, it’s going to be a nightmare for you as these zombies become predators at nights. It will be a lot harder to survive out there in nights.
Your only hope to go back to your place in one piece is trying to sneak past them. Making any sort of noise will attract their attention which is tantamount to being dead within seconds. It's pretty clear that Dying light is aiming for the top spot for being the best zombie survival video game. It's fast, fluid and ruthless!
Scheduled to launch in early 2015, Dying Light is certainly going to appeal to a lot of Rust fans as these two games share a lot in common including a clear focus on survival.
