My First "Eating" Contest

"A Christmas Story" Mommy's Little Piggy Mashed Potato Eating Contest

Randy Parker was "Mommy's Little Piggy"

Randy Parker (played by Ian Petrella) had a hard time eating his dinner, but his mother (played by Melinda Dillon) had the perfect solution. She asked Randy to show her how the little piggy's would eat and Randy would only be to happy to show her. He did this by plowing his face in his mashed potatoes and would start eating away.

That's the inspiration behind Hammond Indiana's, "A Christmas Story" - Mommy's Little Piggy Mashed Potato Eating Contest. In the 2011 event, I came in 2nd place. A man from Crown Point, Indiana came in first. He beat me by half a plate.

Although I felt I did rather well in the first event, I also feel that I have room for improvement.

I've never prepared for an eating contest before, so I had no idea where to begin. You can read all about it by clicking here and read my earlier version on this experience.

How I Prepared

Chinese Food, All-You-Can-Eat Buffets & Chinese All-You-Can-Eat Buffets

Eating Until it Hurts

I once cooked an entire turkey and nearly ate all of it at once. I was literally hurting. Remembering how I couldn't lay on my stomach still makes my stomach ache a bit. I swore I would NEVER do that to myself again - now look at me...
...trying to be the winner at "A Christmas Story" Mommy's Little Piggy Mashed Potato Eating Contest.

I started eating Chinese food a lot, and thank God there was a Chinese take-out (name: Wings) right down the street. I was eating tons of rice and vegetables. Rice was pretty much the only starch I allowed myself to consume and I definitely didn't eat anything that included the potato. I would eat cans and bowls of corn, peas, green beans, &c. I would also try to stay away from bread, but that's rather hard. Who knows? You may find that out someday.

Remembering Back

It's exactly 9:00 pm on this unusually warm evening (58°), and I'm sitting here in my office with the window. I think back at how the first girl I ever took to a school dance was sitting to my left, the guy from Crown Point, Indiana who won the contest sat next to her and towards the end of the table to my right, some kid was throwing up in his plate while the contest was going on.

The owner and morning radio DJ (Jim Dedelow) of WJOB AM Radio of Hammond, Indiana hosted the event and did a fantastic job. Very entertaining and kept the event moving along smoothly -GREAT work!

Wow...I just looked down at the clock on my computer and it says 9:17 pm. It took me 17 minutes to write this much? I really must be reminiscing...huh?

The Second Time Around

This December 15, 2012 at 10 am, the Indiana Welcome Center will be hosting another "A Christmas Story" Mommy's Little Piggy Mashed Potato Eating Contest and I have already registered.

I plan on winning.
