Len is a writer who lives in Brooklyn, New York, and has had a fascination with games and media that has lasted a lifetime.

Chop down a tree. Turn that tree into a wooden ax or hammer. Chop down some more trees and gather the wood. Build a workbench. Now an entire world of crafting is open to you. That might sound like how you start practically every game of Minecraft ever, but there's a whole suite of games that start out almost exactly the same. These Minecraft-like games, also known as "Role-Crafting" games, have taken over the world of online gaming in just a few short years.

If you're a fan of Minecraft but looking for a change of pace, here are some great games like Minecraft that are available. Some of them are free, others are premium titles. Some try to stay true to their inspiration while others diverge greatly from the core gameplay. There are so many interesting games like Minecraft with so many permutations on the theme, it seems like the options for fans of the genre is never ending.

Roblox is a free to play game like Minecraft. Just like Minecraft, the block-based building system can become quite intricate in the right hands. However, Roblox is aimed towards a younger crowd than Minecraft. A lot of the more complicated building efforts are streamlined, making it easier for junior architects to create a working play-space.

Roblox is also played entirely online. Socialization is a major part of the game and players can chat freely as long as they keep it clean. In many ways, Roblox is a combination of Minecraft's crafting system and the old open world chatting and exploration of Second LIfe.

Speaking personally, Terraria is probably my favorite game like Minecraft. In fact, I think it might be the best Minecraft-like game period. The switch from 3D to 2D made a big difference. Making complex buildings was a lot easier in Terraria when you didn't have to constantly be invisioning your structure in three dimensions.

I also appreciated the increased focus on exploration and combat. If you're not a big fan on building towers to the sky, Terraria still has a great action-RPG combat system with plenty of loot and secrets to keep players interested. Reaching the center of the earth while digging deep below the ground is a real thrill and when you fight the H.P. Lovecraft inspired bosses, you'll know there are some real stakes.

Terraria is available from Amazon, Steam, and will be released soon as a paid download for consoles.

If all of the games on this list are notable for being similar to Minecraft, then Minecraft can be said to be similar to Infiniminer. The true original role-crafting game, Infiniminer was the first mining and exploring game with block-based graphics to ever be released. Minecraft drew direct inspiration from this title.

Check out the completed version of Infiniminer here.

It was a stroke of genius to use Lego as an inspiration to create a game like Minecraft. These beloved toy bricks have been providing kids and adults the Minecraft experience offline for decades. Instead of tap-tap-tapping away at bricks filled with stone or diamond to gather resources, simply use your bricks to build the world anyway you see fit.

Blockland is not an official Lego product, for those wondering. It is best played online with a group of likeminded crafting-nerds who are looking to have a good time in a sandbox-style building game.

Blockland can be found at it's website:

King Arthur's Gold

King Arthur's Gold is proof just how deep the Minecraft-like rabbit hole goes. What happens when games that are inspired by Minecraft start inspiring their own homages? King Arthur's Gold is a fun game like Terraria that takes the 2D crafting gameplay and adds a cool RTS element to it.

Build a castle and attack an opposing force, all while trying to keep your territory free of your enemy. Rated as one of the best indie games of 2012, King Arthur's Gold is one of the most unique games like Minecraft available on the PC. Plus, it's free! What could be better?

Download King Arthur's Gold ASAP if you're looking for a unique experience with just a little bit of a Minecraft flavor.

Eden: World Builder

Have you ever wanted to play a game like Minecraft on your iPhone (or iPad or iPod touch)? Well, now youc an. Eden: World Builder is a fun game that takes heavy inspiration from Minecraft. Build a block-based world of your dreams and share it to your friends. Eden has really doubled down on the "destruction" angled as compared to Minecraft or other Role Crafting games. Half the fun of the game is blowing up what you've made!

Unfortunately, Eden does not have any multiplayer so you'll be tending your world by yourself. It is possible to share your creations with friends or the internet at large, but there's currently no option for simultaneous co-op play.

Eden: World Builder is available from iTunes.

Minetest C55

The creators of Minetest aren't afraid to admit that they based their game off of Minecraft. And why should they be? This free game like Minecraft was developed by a group of enthusiastic friends who have worked on the game during their free time.

And what a game they've made! Minetest boasts a huge open world that can range on practically forever. The easy to understand structure of the game makes modding for Mintest C55 a cinch, too!

Modtest runs on both Windows and Linux, so penguin fans have a free Minecraft alternative that's easy and fun to you at the ready.

You can download Minetest C55 right here.

Manic Digger

Manic Digger is a free open source 3D block building game like Minecraft. Right now, there's not a whole lot to differentiate Manic Digger from its competition but the small indie title has a devoted fan base. What the base of the game lacks, in fact, the community has more than made up for. As an open source title, it is incredibly easy to modify in drastic ways.

If you're into creating your own unique content while using a Minecraft-like platform as your engine, you should give Manic Digger a try. Just like other Minecraft style games, it's all about creation. Manic Digger just happens to put as much emphasis on the out of game creation as it does on the in-game.

Download Manic DIgger here.

Ace of Spades

Okay, picture this: you take Minecraft and add some Team Fortress 2 to the mix. This FPS/Crafting game hybrid is truly one of a kind. Ace of Spades tasks players with creating their own weapons and forts while deftly avoiding the slings and arrows of your enemies. Except "slings and arrows' in this case usually means bazooka shells.

This truly impressive blend of FPS action and Minecraft-like block building makes Ace of Spades one of the best games like Minecraft available on the PC. Period.

Ace of Spades can be purchased on Steam

The still in developpment Mythruna takes Minecraft to the next level. Just like Minecraft, players explore a voxel (or is it boxel?) based world and build and craft whatever their imaginations can come up with. What Mythruna does best is smooth out a lot of Minecraft's flaws. Sometimes literally.

A world comprised entirely of six sided cubes doesn't always look so great. Mythruna adds some much needed aesthetic appeal to the Minecraft-like genre. More than that, it is really pushing the "Role" in the "Role-Crafting" genre, offering players multiple races and several different ways to enjoy the world outside of building and mining.

Check out what Mythruna is up to here.

Get out of town. A browser based game like Minecraft? I'm already sold. Explore, craft, and create all without opening up any special programs. Cubelands is really impressive from a technical perspective. It's especially great for those who enjoy playing games like Minecraft and Terraria who aren't able to install any programs on their computer.

Hey, I'm not saying you should play games at work. But if you want to....

Check out Cubelands here.

Fortress Craft

This is probably the most popular game like Minecraft on the Xbox. Except, of course, for the Xbox version of Minecraft! Available from the Xbox Live Indie section, this budget game only costs a measly $3.00 and is definitely worth a look.

It has all the usual Minecraft-esque features and eccentricities. It might not be the best, but it's early adaptation to the Xbox marketplace has made Fortress Craft quite popular.
