Bonjour monsieur: a cardgame game you can play at your leisure

Updated on July 16, 2012

Bonjour, madame!

Sometimes it is not the only fun to make a big cake and invite lots of friends to a party. To bring more life to a party, you can play some games. The activity that I am going to write about is a great way to play a game with children or adults while learning some French. It is a leisure, a sport, a learning experience and fun at the same time.

The game is called “Bonjour, madame!” which means “Hello, Madam!” in French. Actually, it is a courteous way to address a woman. They play this game in France and Russia. This game can be played starting 6 years of age. The game trains attention, reaction, teaches to win and to lose…

There can be from 2 to 10 players. To play this game, you will need a deck of playing cards.

You play it the following way. The leader takes playing cards from the deck one by one. Everyone must see the card. If the card is a nine, everyone must meow. If it is a ten, everyone must bark. If it is a jack, everyone must say “Bonjour, monsieur!” (In French phonetics “bonjur, mesie” - a courteous way to address a man in French). If it is a queen, everyone must say “Bonjour, madame!” (In a French way, in the word “madame” you stress the last syllable). The one who reacted in the wrong way or was the last to react, takes the card. When the deck is over, the players count their cards. The looser is the one who has most of the cards.

Another variant of this game. If a little player cannot memorize all the reactions, the game can be simplified. You can exclude the nines and tens and just greet the queen and the jack.

Besides the party at home, this game can be played in other places, like in the garden or in the train.

Do you play any games with your children or can you share any social fun games that you know? Please write your comments!
