Activision Blizzard Merchandise: Dream Giftbag - Episode #6
Activision (Call of Duty rights owner) and Blizzard (World of Warcraft rights owner) merged forces in 2008, and the two companies are better off for it. Now they have the funds to start all new franchises, and Activision have been quick to put Bungie to use on the Destiny (first released in 2014) series, and Blizzard were quick to launch Overwatch (released in 2016). The two companies are confident in decision making to function as separate business entities.
Activision’s flagship Call of Duty franchise has consistently hit the number one sales spot every year, and has turned revenue that edge into the billions of dollars for their 1 year life-cycle Call of Duty titles. That’s right, unless there is a GTA game coming out in the year Call of Duty is always the one to turn the most revenue in sales. That means, the franchise has been turning a profit since the first title debuted in 2003, a game that released originally on the PlayStation 2.
However, Blizzard have not been too far behind on the A-ball in 2016, as Overwatch outsold the number of copies sold by the 2016 title release of Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare. But, if this is a comparison in raw sales revenue then Call of Duty will have remained the lead in 2016 as Call of Duty Infinite Warfare released alongside an addition COD title, Modern Warfare Remastered, doubling the revenue potential for the franchise. Not a beloved decision from the Call of Duty community, but in reality Activision is a business, and in the business of making money this was a financial sure-thing, as releasing Modern Warfare Remastered separately will have completely boggered their sales for Infinite Warfare whilst selling at full retail price. Plus, Call of Duty: Black Ops III received a new DLC zombie pack in 2016, and this sold considerably well - thanks to a strong Treyarch studio developer fan following.
Sorry Overwatch, the Call of Duty franchise is still too powerful to be outsold by a newcomer title.
Blizzard has also seen steady sales from their latest Diablo III game (released in 2014), and as of 2015 has sold 30 million copies across the platforms.
