Neopets was the first of the big online virtual pet sites and is almost ten years old. It was made for college students but nowadays many children use the site. The whole thing is free and you get three pets to adopt and play with.
The site is massive and the range of things you can do is enormous. There are clubs and guilds to join. Regular new competitions appear. You can team with friends to take part in quests. A popular club is the astronomy club.This gives you a telescope to look for the constellations of stars in the sky. If you find them all, you get a prize.

This is a place that you need to careful about visiting. There are magical things to be found in the caves and these can get you a lot of Mara money. If don't keep your eyes open though your pet can get lost and it might not be so easy again. It is still the place to get the best health and, if you are lucky, magic stats.
If you need more money to spend in all the great Mara stores, you need to get your pet a job from the job center.
Jobs include actress, doctor,astronaut vet and even thief- though I'm sure that a thief really does too much work.
Be careful though you will lose all that lovely money if you forget to look after your pet and he doesn't show up for work when he is supposed to.
Fearsome combat with pet against pet happens in the battle arena. You need to teach your pet well if you want him to win!
The shops have clothes to buy and things for your Mara pet home. If you look around it is amazing just how much choice there is- and of course you can always open your own shop. Maybe you will get Mara rich!

There is no massive online world here but the fabulous, lifelike graphics deserve a special mention. Great for the virtual pet lover who dosen’t want to spend too much time in other worlds.

Best Virtual Companions on other Platforms?
This page has been all about personal computer pets. There are plenty of other way to enjoy having a virtual pet, though.
My personal favorite is Eyepet. This you can be found on PS3 Move. You need the PS3 console and the Move camera to play this but there is a lot of fun that everyone in the family can get involved in.
Move games are great for parties, too.
Wonderful, Foopet-like, dogs and cats can be found on Ninendogs. To play this you will have to own the Nintendo 3DS.
