Age of Empires 4 release date information

Updated on July 4, 2013

Release date overview

Age of Empires 4 is one of the most anticipated games for any strategy game fan, which makes this release date that much more depressing.

The truth is that Microsoft currently has no known intention of making an Age of Empires 4, they might someday in the future for the Xbox One, but Microsoft is secretive and nobody knows right now. If they were to release the game, don't expect it to be anywhere sooner than 2014 through 2016, and even then, chances are it won't be developed.

After the collapse of Ensemble Studios in 2009, Activision offered to buy the Age of Empires series from Microsoft so that they could be the ones to make Age of Empires 4; unfortunately, Microsoft refused to give up the rights to make Age of Empires 4, which might mean they intend to continue the series in the future. On the other hand it might be because they want to die, nobody knows at this point.

About the collapse of Ensemble Studios

Ensemble Studios started out back in 1995 as an independent developer and in 1997 they came out with their hit game: Age of Empires. Their initial success paid for the development of not only a sequel but a resale of the company to Microsoft in 2001. After the acquisition, Ensemble Studios went on to make a spin off of Age of Empires called Age of Mythology, which was also quite popular.

Ensemble went on to make a third Age of Empires game, along with two full expansions. After which they were called upon by Microsoft to make a real time strategy game, Halo Wars, which was/is one of the most popular console-based RTS games out there.

Ensemble Studios was in the works of a Halo MMO, believe it or not, which would have been very interesting to say the least. Unfortunately for them Microsoft dissolved the company 2009 and cancelled all of Ensemble's works in progress, including the Halo MMO: Titan.

There are lots of rumors out there about why the company was dissolved. Some of the best ones would probably be either over-staffing or cost cutting out, probably because of increased competition from apple. Not very many people actually know the reason for the destruction of Ensemble Studios, but one thing that should be known is that while profitable, RTS games don't really make as much money as people think, it's sort of a niche market in a sense.

The unknown fate of the Age of Empires 4 release date

Ensemble Studios had quite a reputation as a grade A game developer, which is why people were so confused as to why it was disbanded by Microsoft. Well the truth is that nobody really knows whether or not there will be a release date for Age of Empires 4. As of right now there are only faint rumors on forums here and there. People speculate as to whether or not Microsoft has any serious intentions of making Age of Empires 4, most people think they're satisfied with their Age of Empires MMO, which has received mixed reviews.

If you're an optimist then the realistic release date would probably fall somewhere between 2014 and 2016, and if it doesn't happen by then, then it would be hard to expect an Age of Empires 4 from Microsoft anytime in the rest of this decade.

If you're a pessimist then the official Age of Empires 4 release date is a forgotten name, someday to be erased from history through the slow passage of time, it all just depends on your point of view.

***If Microsoft or anyone else ever does start developing Age of Empires 4 this page will be updated to reflect those new updates***

Man AoE is one of the best strategy games ever and it's a lot better then a first person shooter, all you do in one of those is run around killing anything that so much as blinks and run out of ammo and die while trying to find more. Age of Empires is a classic and should not be allowed to die!!!!!!!!

      AAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH stupid big time corporations!

what's the problem of microsoft. either make the 4th part or cash it in. i'm sure plenty of game makers will be demanding the rights of this epic game.

Yeah, but people can easily be wrong. I remember this one time when I was watching who wants to be a millionaire; this guy was on the first question for 100 dollars, "what week of November is thanksgiving?" The options were 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th.

This guy asked the audience and 70ish percent said the 4th, but it was actually on the 3rd, or vise-versa. I don't remember which week thanksgiving was actually on.

Long story short, sometimes the majority can be wrong.

And I will definitely buy AoE 4 if it comes out. Even now I play through the campaign (AoE 3) all the time and it brings back many fond memories from when I was younger (Perhaps a little to young for this game, but who cares). Now I play around with the hidden (and really fun!!) cheats and wait for the next game!

If you think about it, (if being released) AoE 4 will take time to be as awesome as it should be. The graphics in AoE 3 are incredible for 2005. From the time that it is taking I am sure it'll come soon. Just wait. It wont disappoint.

Two years ago I thought the saga was dead. The releases of new titles gave me some hope´╗┐ of finally having AoE4 soon. They released AoE Online, AoE II HD and announced´╗┐ AoE for iOS/Android recently, take a look: http://codeitdown.com/age-of-empires-4-closer/

AOE is the best game I ever played after FIFA. Spend hours and hours on my PC. I always defeated my rivals very slowly. I played defensive and focused mainly on the development of my kingdom. I enjoyed killing their civilians more.

I just hope there is a AOE IV coming up very soon. Can't find any reasons why they did not do it till now.

      @AoE

I hate to break it to you, but I've seen that video and it's fake. If you hit the "show more" button on the description the author even says so himself.

Nobody knows whether or not they're going to make it or not yet.

I love age of empires. But hey, guess what they just made another expansion for Age of Kings, so maybe it isn't dead just yet. Besides there's a trailer for either Age 4, or the finale... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1biIRxTRCS8

An Age of Empires game on a console... no. RTS games should be made for the PC, since they are more complex and require more resources/controls. God damn.

      To "Numerius,"

I know what you mean, Age of Empires was/is one of my favorite games of all time, yet games like Call of Duty are drastically more popular. It's sad how small of a demographic actually enjoys thinking while playing games. The large majority of gamers love to zone out when playing and hate thinking, which is probably why RTS games never have very big fan bases.

On the other hand RTS fan bases are extremely loyal and play for thousands of hours, if they could profit off of that somehow, then maybe they could keep their heads above water better.

Sigh, the best generally get cut. It is a saddening society that we live in that Age of Empires 4 is a forgotten cause while Call of Duty makes another every 1.25 years.
