Amazing Hot Air Balloons

Updated on May 11, 2012

Hot Air Balloon (Darth)

Until very recently I was unaware of the extravagant nature of some hot air balloons. When I think of hot air balloons I get an image in my mind of a standard round bulb with a basket dangling from the underside. Possibly decorated with some nice coloring or designs but as I recently discovered there are a great many complex shapes out there, balloons designed to shock and amaze. Many are shaped as animals, pop culture icons, people and even collections of things. Below I have included a lot of pictures of these balloons and I'm sure, like I was, you will be equally amazed with them.

This one to the right I'm sure many will recognize right away. I'm sure many can only imagine what it would be like to dangle in a hot air balloon basket below a huge Darth Vader head at one thousand feet!

Some of those in the above picture in the background are typical. But as you can see from the back end of the turtle and the skunk balloon there are some pretty amazing ones going up in the air. The balloonist conventions bring out all kinds of balloons. The skunk hot air balloon reminds me of Pepe Le Pew from the Bugs Bunny and Tweety Show. Possibly that is what the balloon was modeled after.

How about sailing into the sky tethered to your favorite soft drink beverage. Maybe you hate Coke or just can't drink it due to diabetes or other medical problems but there is no denying it is an interesting thing to see in the sky. I'm sure the people at the Coca-cola company are glad balloons like these are flying around as it creates free advertisements for the beverage and gets people buying. Maybe the balloons are made by the company themselves who knows.

Two pink ones I found very interesting was the pink elephant and pig. The pig is quite stylish with his sunglasses. They say pigs can't fly but this one certainly beat the odds and is now sailing skyward. The pink elephant seems quite happy to be going aloft as well.

One technical aspect I find so fascinating about these balloons is how they can have such intricate parts such as the trunk and ears on the elephant and the snout, legs, etc. on the pig. I would think that such pieces would harm the overall integrity of the balloon as a whole but if they are making them this way and flying them they must be sound.

The Jester above is very intricate with the headgear bells and all. Why the sad face I'm really not sure but it is a rather inventive hot air balloon! To the right we can also see, and I'm sure you already guessed it, Humpty Dumpty. The egg man balloon comes complete with a little wall under his bottom which can be seen is you look closely.

This one conjures up nursery rhymes from my youth. Lets just hope that this Humpty Dumpty does not have a great fall. Sorry, I had to say it.

The final balloons in this series are a Panda, the Energizer bunny, Noahs' ark and a flower. All very extravagant. I like the Noah's ark hot air balloon the most of these as it has so much to it, it almost looks like a parade float. Let me know what you think about the balloons in the comments.

If you want to forward this article to others I encourage it. Use the facebook, twitter or Google+1, link at the top of the page or click the share button at the bottom of the page for other social networks. Someone you know may find this of interest.

Kieran Gracie - I do brainstorm a lot to think of hub ideas, sometimes writers block kicks in but I hope I continue to keep making it interesting :) I see you've seen some pretty cool shaped hot air balloons too. True the Noah's ark is great, I love it too. Very Detailed!

Great Hub, terrektwo, voted up and interesting. You never cease to amaze me with your wide range of ideas for Hubs - I wish I had your inventiveness! I have always loved these hot air balloons, and we often see great shapes in the skies over the UK at this time of year. A gasoline can (Mobil, I think), a Big Mac hamburger, a teddy bear (probably Winnie the Pooh), Donald Duck - just a few that I've seen in the last year. Of course these balloons make wonderful advertising 'bill boards' but their creation is still marvelous. But I liked your Noah's Ark best!

I absolutely loved this hub! The Noah's ark is my favorite, just the connection to sailing off in to the unknown is awesome.
