Jake is one of the Movies Main Avatar Characters
The RDA Mining Corporation offer Jake the position because he has the same genetic makeup as his brother which will save time for the company rather than trying to find another human who fits the bill; the money's good, and the head of security Colonel Miles Quaritch adds a little twist offering to make sure the company comes up with the money for a costly operation to restore the use of his legs.
When Jake transforms into Avatar state it gives him
back a pair of legs so he can walk and run; although he holds on to his consciousness his body is Na'vi to enter their world and fined out what makes them tick. Colonel Quaritch's offer to make sure he gets back the use of his own legs comes at the price of being able to extract enough information from the Na'vi to defeat
them in battle. This is no problem for Jake he's a Marine through and through; until he gets to know the Omaticaya clan and the way of the Na'vi.

Jake Sully could have been James Bond
He was a finalist to play James Bond in Casino Royale (2006)
before Daniel Craig was cast. He'd not been cast in a large-scale production
before and as you can imagine must have jumped at the chance to play the part of Jake Sully. He's already singed on for Avatar II, if it happens, and taking into cosideration James Cameron statement.
"If Avatar was financially successful, he hoped to make two sequels to the film".
Having now grossed more than any other film made; you can bet you will be seeing more of Jake Sully and Sam Worthington.

which also gain critical acclaim. Two more acclaimed Australian films came
along 'Dirty Deeds' and 'Gettin Square'; it seems his best work was 'Somersault'
where he went on to win best actor; 'Somersault' also went on to to win in all
13 film categories at the Australian Film Institute awards; it's not hard to see why James Cameron chose Sam Worthington to play Avartars Jake Sully.
