Axis & Allies Miniatures

Updated on April 2, 2013

Axis & Allies Minis

Axis & Allies is a collectible miniatures wargame produced by Wizards of the Coast. Axis & Allies miniatures are sold in packs which typically contain 5 random miniatures with statistic (stat) cards which outline the miniatures details. The stat card will cover movement, attack and defence values and special abilities. New players will need a starter pack to get things going. The 1939-45 starter pack contains 2 maps, rulebook, 8 dice and ten miniatures to get you started. The original starter pack contained 18 random miniatures but I have never seen one for sale. As mentioned above, you are able to buy random miniatures from retailers. The problem with random miniatures is that you quite often don't get the miniatures you want. This is why a large secondary market exists for axis & allies singles. Players are selling off unwanted minis and buying the ones they want. Some enterprising traders will buy cases of minis, break them up into singles or small groups and sell them on their own websites or on e-bay. Just make sure you read the listing to ensure that you are getting the stat card/s with your purchase.

I also have written a page on Axis and Allies War at Sea

Expansions

There have been a number of expansions to Axis and allies miniatures over the years and some of the early releases are now becoming rarities as evidenced by prices on e-bay. Some of the more expensive pieces are what you might expect to see such as the King TIger and Jagdtiger for the Germans. The Western Allies lack firepower so the US M18 and M10 tank destroyers and British Sherman Firefly tend to be more expensive.

Base Set

The base set was the original axis and allies miniatures release in 2005. There was a starter kit with 12 random minnies, 4 double sided maps 8 dice and a rulebook. This starter kit is now a rarity but the units are usually available on e-bay.

The base set included:

Contested Skies

The contested skies expansion was released in March 2006. Not surprisingly it featured key aircraft such as the IL-10 Sturmovik, P51D Mustang, Messerschmit BF109E and the A6M2 Zero. Contested Skies also included light anti aircraft guns and the wirblewind flak panzer. Some starch was added to the allied anti tank arsenal with the 17pdr at for the Brits. The Americans got an M26 Pershing and M36 Gun Motor Carriage.

D-Day

The D-Day expansion was released in June 2006 and contained a lot of cool units such as the Sherman duplex drive, Churchill AVRE, P38 Lockheed Lightning and arguably the most destructive soldier unit in the game, the US resourceful hero. The Germans didn't entirely miss out as they got the Jagdtiger, Veteran Tiger and Focke Wulf 190A. Many units from the D-Day expansion are hard to find or expensive. The Higgins Boat is almost impossible to find and I have been watching for years for the British defiant paratroopers to be listed at a reasonable price.

Units for the D-Day expansion were:

Canada

Canadian Infantrymen

Reserves

The reserves expansion was released in November 2006. As well as new units for the major powers the reserves expansion introduced the units from Hungary. This set also included the games first jet aircraft the Gloster Meteor for the British and Me 262 for the Germans. The Brits also got the Centurion A41, The Russians gained some real heavy hitters with the IS-3 and SU-152 and the Japanese got some much needed firepower with the Chi Nu. The Germans gained some useful units in the Nebelwerfer and the Goliath remote controlled demolition tank. The other key inclusion with this set was the "support" units the Headqurters, Ammo Dump and Fuel Dump.

The units for the Reserves expansion are:

North Africa

A lot of sand coloured vehicles in this expansion. The Africa Korps tank units have the benefits of veterancy. The Germans also get a raft of halftracks and armoured cars. Not to mention the dreaded 88. The Brits and Italians get their key tanks of the North African campaign whilst the Americans get early M4A1 Shermans and novice infantry. I have played the "untested recruit units and they are not as bad as their name and points cost implies.

Early War

With the exception of purists most players prefer the mis to late war weapons. Producing an early war expansion was a nice idea but with a distint absence of big hitters most units are fairly cheap in the after market. Great news if you want to round out your collection with some early war gear or re-enact the invasion of Poland or the low countries.
