Gaming System Console for Video Games 2014 Review

Updated on January 9, 2014

What's the Best Console for Gamers in 2013?

Yup, I confess! I'm an avid gamer and ready to challenge the next guy who walks in the room to a wild game. With that being said, it's important to me to have the best gaming system console, so stick around while we talk about the best ones.

When it comes to gaming, there are a lot of options out there. If you are thinking of buying a new gaming console for yourself and your family, then you will want to consider the three main products that we are discussing here.

You will find information on the pros and cons of each gaming console, so you can make an educated purchase. One of the features of current gaming systems are the get-up-and-move devices that they come with.

The new technology that allows you to wirelessly control your movements on the screen makes gaming more involved and hands on. This type of technology helps you get off your couch and get moving. The one thing you should consider before buying a gaming console with this type of technology is the space you have in your home in which to move around. These devices would not be recommended for small spaces.

Also, these gaming systems do not come with two controllers. That may be one piece of equipment that you will need to buy extra so you have enough controllers for at least two people to play.

Also, charging stations are much nicer to buy as well so you can charge more than one controller at once. There are always a few little extra accessories that you will want to be aware of having to purchase aside from the device itself; that can be a drawback for some, but if you do your research, you can then determine what accessories fit your needs and then go from there.

As of right now, the Xbox One and PS4 are not one this list. When these two consoles are released, out site will be updated.

Best Gaming System

Xbox 360

The Xbox 360 comes with Kinect which will enhance your gaming. As mentioned earlier, this gets you off your backside and gives you a chance to move around. You can play soccer games and kick your feet as the ball soars to the goal, you can dance, and you can play with others for a more involved experience. The device has built in Wi-Fi and will allow you to connect to Xbox LIVE where you can access streaming movies and television quite easily that you can view in HD. You also have access to download game add ons like new characters, different maps or music.

You can even make friends from around the world and play games with them. Who needs pen pals anymore? If social networking is your thing, then you can also access Facebook and Twitter to keep up with your social life. The Kinect sensor will detect your entire body and will mirror your movements in the games you play; you are virtually the controller. Another popular feature is the 5.1 surround sound that gives you an integrative audio experience while you play. Your purchase comes with a wireless Xbox 360 controller that will give you a range of up to 30 feet away from the machine and has about 30 hours of battery life.

You are given more ports for connectivity as well. It comes with a total of 5; there are 3 in the back and 2 in the front. Not only does it come with a typical Ethernet and HDMI port, but there is now an integrated optical audio port so you can get amazing sound from your A/V receiver. To give you a Kinect experience right out of the box, your purchase gives you the Kinect Adventures game. You can be an astronaut in space, ride the rapids, complete obstacle courses or dive deep into the ocean. Lots of parents say that their young children are able to play these games and that they are user friendly for younger players.

The games are rated "E" for everyone and the whole family will have fun learning this new device. There are some things you might want to consider before purchasing however. The first thing is that the machine does not run super quiet; it is not loud, but users have discussed that it runs a little louder than expected. Also, having access to Xbox Live means you have to pay for it. If you already pay for streaming services, you will have to fork out money for an Xbox Live Gold membership just to be able to use them with your gaming system. This has been a big complaint among Xbox users. It is also reported to have high power consumption and a 4GB hard drive might not be big enough for heavy gamers that save lots of data. But overall, the Xbox has made gamers very happy for many years.

Top Rated Gaming System Console

PS3

The next system we are reviewing is the PS3. The purchase of this device often comes with the Playstation Move bundle. In a nutshell, you get the console, a 320GB hard drive, one wireless controller, a Playstation Eye camera and a Move controller, along with a game to play with the Move option. It too comes with playback in HD displays, access to download more games and movies from the Playstation Network, it comes with built in Wi-Fi for Internet browsing.

While using the PS Move, the system will also incorporate the Eye camera so that your motions are more accurately portrayed on the television screen. If you are a graphics junkie, then you will be happy with the NVIDIA graphic processor that this machine comes with. The unit itself is smaller than the average console; it uses less energy and also has a quieter fan. Users do say that this machine runs much quieter than the Xbox. For sound, you get Dolby Digital 5.1; so with good sound and great graphics, your experience will be that much better with this machine. It is also compatible to connect with your PC network or PSP so you get ultimate functionality. If you love watching Blu-ray movies, you will be pleased to know that this console uses the Blu-ray disc format; this means that you will have an endless stream of games and other multimedia that you so desire.

It also supports 6 other disc formats as well. A great feature is that your Playstation Network membership is free once you've purchased the device; there is no need for a monthly or annual membership fee to access all the features on the PS3. The DualShock 3 controller that is included in your purchase has been updated and made to work even better than before. It incorporates motion sensing technology to be more intuitive when you are moving around within a game. The makers wanted players to have a controller that was a virtual extension of their body. This device also offers HDMI + Bravia Synch functionality which means that you can connect to other Sony HDMI products without having to use multiple controllers. Be aware that some users have complained of their games freezing up on them, or the device dying within a short period of time. Make sure you buy a device that is new; otherwise you might run into problems with refurbished machines. Although this console will play PS1 and PS3 games, it will not play PS2 games for whatever reason.

Be advised that there are still games coming out for the Move, but as of yet, there is not a huge library of choices. If you are not interested in the Move portion, then don't buy the bundle and get a plain PS3. The Playstation is also a popular gaming console for families everywhere and users have been quite happy with how easy set-up is and how intuitive the Move sensors are that make gaming very precise. The Move games will sometimes require the use of two controllers at the same time, so keep that in mind when purchasing this console; you may need to get another controller if you have multiple players in your home.

Best Active Gaming System

Wii & Wii U

The Wii is a gaming console that comes with its motion sensing gameplay already built in; it was designed for it. One stand apart feature for the Wii is the fact that the games are more family friendly and have cartoon like character that your kids will love. The games that can be played on this device are also more geared toward party games and group gaming. The other gaming consoles we have discussed here are not quite so group geared; there are a lot more single player games than multiplayer with the other consoles.

This device comes with a Wii remote but also a nun chuck for games that require it. The remote has the technology for precision like the Wii MotionPlus accessory, but it is all built into one single unit. The controller is used like a wand that is picked up by the sensor and then you get precise gaming as well. Users tend to like the speaker in the controller as well which makes some fun sound effects to be heard more clearly since it is coming from your hand instead of the television across the room. Like the other consoles, Wii comes with something called WiiWare that give you access to game downloads and apps that you can put on your console.

These can be purchased with Wii Points on the Wii Channel. Online gaming requires a code to play; so if you have children who you want to monitor online gaming activities for, this makes a great feature. Even if your child is playing online, it is free of charge and no names are used so there is more anonymity. Users really like being able to access classic arcade type games through WiiWare. This console is also streaming compatible as well. One major drawback for many users is the fact that the Wii will only play CD's. It is not Blu-ray or DVD compatible. Another thing that has been reported is the slow load time of videos on the Internet. You will be paying less for this device than one of the others we discussed that come with a bundle. If you needs are simple and you just want to play some games, then this might be a good purchase for you.

Differences in the Gaming System Consoles

As you can see, there are some big differences between all three gaming consoles. One thing to keep in mind while shopping is what kinds of games you like to play. Many people will take a look at the types of games that are available for each console before they decide which one to go with. And honestly, the best way to determine how you will like a gaming console is to test one out. Gaming stores usually have consoles set up so you can play a few games, and get the feel of the controllers and the graphics on the systems.

There are some significant differences in regards to the types of games that PS3 and Xbox offer compared to the Wii. Another thing to consider is how much online access you want for browsing or for gaming. Many hardcore gamers stick with one of the first two devices we discussed, and as was mentioned, the Wii has many more family friendly type games to cater to younger users.

One more thing to consider is how big the hard drive is. Sometimes, the amount of space that these devices come with is not enough to support a lot of saved data from many different types of games. Hard core gamers find that they need more space than the average person. So make sure you look into how much data each hard drive can hold. Hopefully you can get all the information you need so you can make a very educated purchase that you will end up happy with.
