Battlestar Galactica The Board Game Review

Battlestar Galactica can be played by both massive fans of the show like myself or people who have not seen a single episode. I know its hard to believe but those people actually exists. I really enjoy the challenge of trying to beat this game if I am force to play a human or enjoy trying to sabotage the game without being discovered while playing a cylon. Both of these can be a lot of fun although you're chances of winning if your are human are severely stacks against you. Often time if you do manage to win it will be just narrowly. I am talking one more turn and it would be over.

Battlestar Galactica the Board Game

What is Battlestar Galactica The Board Game?

Battlestar Galactica the board game is loosely based on the more recent re vamp TV series based of the 1970 TV series of the same name. Sounds a little bit confusing I know, but this recent reboot has found many new young and old fans, and has possibly sparked a multitude of heated comparative discussions from both group of fans.

The Games mechanic of Battlestar Galactica does a great job of keeping up the level suspense and tension during the game. Much like the TV series you are never truly sure of who is a Cylon and who isn't, well that is not until the game is over. Players will get a chance to play as one of the cast and crew, send people to the brig, or fly out in vipers to protect the civilian ships, all this action takes place while you are attempting to reach you objective, make it to Kobol in one piece.

About Battlestar Galactica The Board Game?

Battlestar Galactica is unique in its game play, in that everyone appears to work together to conserve and manage resources all the while constantly looking over your shoulder. What decision the other players are making, what they are saying, how they are saying it, even there very mannerism will be met with scrutiny. Accusations on who is a Cylon will fly, you will probably be accused of being a Cylon several times , you will have a few heated augmented along the way, and be ask to explain your reasoning for some of the actions you' ve made. However when the game is over, and all is said and done, whether you have won, or not. The experience you will take from the game will be a long and pleasurable one.

Are you a Cylon?

That is the underlining question that will fuel, and ramp up the tension of this board game. Whether you are a Cylon or not, or have the best intentions of the others in mind you will find yourself questioning, and at some point possibly second guessing some of the action you will be forced make.

This type of game mechanic may sound odd to some people, but that's how Battlestar Galactica is supposed to be played. You'll have to examine and decide which outcome to take based on your current situation. Not all decisions will be easy to make considering most of the crisis you will face have two negative outcomes to choose from. Choosing the less potentially negative outcomes to make will not always be easy.

The Game Components of Battlestar Galactica.

The Characters:

Each Character card represents some of your favorite personalities from the Battlestar Galactica Crew from Starbuck to Adama. Each of these characters have particular skill sets and both positive and negative abilities.Unlike the TV series the any characters you choose to play;ay has the chance to be a cylon. It it also worth noting that whatever character you choose to play will not give you any advantages, or improve your chance of winning.

Skill Cards:

Skill Cards are primarily used to overcome skill checks or to help you perform certain actions. Skills cards can only be used by the characters in accordance to their particular skill set.

Destiny Decks:

Destiny decks are used to add an element of uncertainty to each skills check. Two cards are added for each skills check perform. This is done to prevent people from easily guessing who might be a cylon.

Used to determine your allegiance in other words to determine if you are a cylon or not. There is strong chance that some of the players allegiance may change about mid course of the game.

The Ships:

Vipers:

Used to defend the fleet both Galactica and the civilian vessels also used to attack cylon ships and Basestar.

Raptors:

Used to scout new destinations a well as to attempt to find more resources.

Civilian ships:

Contains the most precious cargo, the human population. Losing any of the ships will result in losing resources most likely population.

Basestars:

Can launch both raiders and heavy raiders. The Basestar can also attack Galactica directly.

Raiders:

Can attack vipers and civilian ships.

Heavy Raiders:

Used solely to reach the hanger deck and release deadly centurion boarding parties.

Final Thoughts

Much like all things in life there is always the good and the bad and it is no different for the Battlestar Galactica Board Game.

The good

It is amazing how grossly Battlestar Galactica' s thematic game mechanics will make you feel immersed into its universe. Being able to play characters such as Adama and force a jump or playing Starbuck and getting a chance to pilot a viper to defend your fleet.

The Bad

the length of some of the games can be quite long. I would not there by recommend it to anyone who doesn't have the patience for such types of games. Also being stuck in the brigg and be reduced to limited actions can be somewhat frustrations especially if are not a cylon and are seeing everything in the game going south.

This looks like a great game! I would have to find friends willing to put up with the long gameplay, though. But I love the series!
