Best Budget BF4 Graphics Cards 2016

Updated on October 5, 2016
toptengamer profile image

I left my Finance job 6 years ago to work for my dream boss, myself. I've never looked back. I focus on tech, gaming, and hardware reviews.

Using benchmarks we'll take a look at the graphics cards that give you the best value for BF4 at each price point. Pictured: A pair of 980's in SLI does a great job of getting me above 100 FPS in Battlefield 4.

I'm not sure about you but the game I'm still the most excited about playing on Friday with my buddies is Battlefield 4. Despite its release back in 2013, there's been enough new content and fixes that the game is now more fun than ever. I say this knowing that there are other new games like The Division and Rainbow Six Siege out there. These caught my eye for a week or two but simply didn't have the staying power of BF4.

So, if you're like me and still playing Battlefield 4, what graphics card would be ideal for your setup? Using benchmarks as well as some other factors, I'll show you which graphics cards I feel give you the best value for your money in BF4.

Update: Playing Battlefield 1? Here's a look at the best BF1 graphics cards by budget.

When Battlefield 4 was initially released it was considered an AMD release because of AMD's pre-release drivers and the games future optimization with Mantle. Upon release AMD cards performed better, when compared to other graphically intense games, in comparison to NVIDIA's lineup.

Now that the game has been out a while the gap has narrowed as NVIDIA's drivers became more optimized. In addition, as DICE patched some of the optimization issues, it took less to run the game in the Ultra preset.

Best BF4 Graphics Cards for the Money - Under $150

Despite its release more than a year ago I still play Battlefield 4 every weekend. I played Battlefield Hardline as well; however, it failed to keep my interest.
Despite its release more than a year ago I still play Battlefield 4 every weekend. I played Battlefield Hardline as well; however, it failed to keep my interest.

The card that really catches my eye here is the GTX 950. It's small form factor and around 45 frames for ultra 1080p means that you can slightly adjust your settings and play Battlefield 4 with nearly everything maxed at 60 frames.

It's more than adequate for your main rig, HTPC, or any budget gaming PC build where you want to run BF4 in 1080p.

BF4 GPU Recommendation Under $200

Best Battlefield 4 Card Under $200

This is a bit of a tricky category because although I'd probably recommend the GTX 960 here, both it and the R9 380 simply feel a little outdated to me. Honestly, I'd recommend you jump up to the $300 price point or down to something like the GTX 950 until we get some better options.

Still, the 960 does its job here with around 50 frames a second on ultra settings 1080p. Tweak the MSAA and you'll get to the coveted 60 frames a second.

Graphics Cards Under $300

Best BF4 Graphics Card Under or Around $300

In the $300 range I recommend you go with the GTX 970. It gives you solid 1080p performance at 84 frames in ultra and is better than Titan X performance in SLI.

Guru3D recently did a review of *2 GTX 970's in SLI at 1440p with 2xMSAA showing 108 FPS. This would work perfectly with a good G-Sync monitor.

What about the R9 390X?

I prefer the GTX 970 because it's generally cheaper right now and often comes with a AAA title. That being said these two go back and forth on many games with the R9 390X winning a lot of the time so ultimately you'll have to decide what's most important.

Best BF4 Graphics Card Under or Around $400

At the $400 price point you should go with the GTX 980. It'll provide you solid 1080p or 1440p performance in Battlefield 4.

If you'd prefer the AMD option here, you'll find it in the R9 390X. Still, for either of these options, I find myself wanting to go with the 980Ti for about 30% more. The excess performance is simply too much to ignore.

Another good option would be a used 780 Ti. This card still performs admirably in the game and is often a good buy when purchased from a third-party site.

Best Battlefield Graphics Cards Under $500 to $1,000 (High-end) 2016

If you plan on spending this much on your graphics card, I'll just assume you'll be playing in 1440p or 4k. As you can see in the table above and the one below, there's quite a few numbers that we can draw on.

Under $600:

Here you can either go with the GTX 980 TI or a pair of 970's in SLI. The 970's in SLI will give you substantially more performance but may be worth less to some that play games that aren't SLI optimized. Also, if the 980 Ti is good enough for you right now it may be a good idea to go with the 980Ti and then in the future run them in SLI.

Over $1,000

In this category, I'd run GTX 980 Ti's in SLI. Yes, you could go with a Titan X or Titan Z option, but I think this makes the most sense in terms of performance. Another option would be a pair of Fury X cards; however, I think most would agree that the 980 Ti is still the king here.

Final Thoughts

Ok, that's my quick look at the best value graphics cards for Battlefield 4. I'd love to hear what you have to say about the current graphics card situation.

Clearly the poll above was made before AMD's new R9 and R7 GPU were released and that is reflected in the "other" stat.

Also, if you have any comments, then I'm available in the comment section below. Please allow for up to 24 hours for your comment and my response.

According to Guru3D the 760 gives you just about 1 FPS more on 1080p.

Try to upgrade to the HD 7850 if you're going to make the switch. I think you'll be happier in the long-run.

guess you didn't consider high resolutions and high settings in your review. if your using a 1440p or greater monitor and maxing settings - GG 3gb cards. Hallo titan. Its the only perk the poor guys who bought them have. They are futureproof because NVidia was greedy enough to sell everyone cards w 3gb of vram this late in the cycle.

FWIW the titan will be too low on HP to power games before its vram becomes obsolete. what's wrong w that picture? I smell NVidia using the extra ram to justify the price, not because it would be used or even necessary a fraction of the time.

radeon 7990 is a terrible suggested as it is still 2 x 7950 but in a single card, so basically you will have micro stuttering and all the problems that come with CF but in a single card. Stick to the GTX 780 or 290/x

I think it really depends on how Crossfire ends up scaling in BF4... my guess is that a pair of GPUs like that would give you your desired result. That being said the FX 6100 may hold you back a bit. Sorry I don't have a better answer :)

At the moment not even the GTX 780 can run BF4 on ultra, I'm pretty sure it's due to optimisation though, as at the settings you have to run it at, it doesn't even look as good as BF3.

I guess I'm confused about VRAM. I was looking at the EVGA geforce gtx 770, and its got 2GB. Is that fine for BF4 if I'm only running one monitor? Also, on the topic of one high end gpu vs two medium ones, it seems that many opinions are polar opposites. Any thoughts? Thank you!

My guess is yes based on what it does in Battlefield 3; however, we'll know early October. Be sure to get a 3GB + based card if you can.

Do you think the GTX 780M can handle BF4?
