Gun Fight (1977)

As a wild west gunslinger you move in a vertical position firing 2 six shooters. It is a one or two player game and you compete in a series of one on one shoot outs. The game had limited items other than stagecoaches and cactus. If you run out of ammo you lose automatically. You have nowhere to hide and the quickest shots with the best aim wins the gun fight. A fan of the wild west could appreciate this showdown which set the stage for future gun slinging bandit games by Atari and Nintendo.

The Incredible Wizard (1981)

One or two players compete by escaping monster filled mazes. In essence you are in a dungeon and all monsters must be shot and killed in order to pass to the end of the maze. The gun is used to kill wolves, scorpions, insects and dinosaurs. It is a re make of the famous arcade game entitled Wizard of Wor. In 2 player mode you can work together as partners or turn on each other and attack to obtain a bonus. A classic for the game console without a doubt and an early Adventure style RPG, if you will.

Video Game Console Rating

1 out of 5 stars from 1 rating of Bally Astrocade

Cosmic Raiders (1978)

A side scroller where you shoot up at flying objects while dodging incoming missile fire. This game is a knock off of Defender and it is just as entertaining as well. You shoot down aliens and bombs. A radar on the screen shows you where enemies are and you shoot lasers to kill them before they can approach and destroy you by shooting at you, running into you or even setting bomb traps in space.

Football (1978)

In "Football" the game has no penalties, no interceptions or picks and there is no out of bounds. It is a one or two player game and at the time it was fun to drive the field with big passes. There is no music but it is loaded with sound effects for tackles and when touchdowns are scored by either team. The only issue is that it is far too easy to score points and defense does not count for much but at the same time this is the early years of sports in video games.

Hardware

For some, video games is a way of life on a daily basis or even an hourly basis. Astrocade has two controllers and of course the console itself.

Space Invaders (1981)

Space Invaders is a one player, two-dimensional shooter where the layer fires lasers at incoming aliens in the sky above. The aliens become faster and more widespread as you progress and scoring points is the goal of this title for the Astrocade. The alien enemy fires lasers but at times they team up and sky bomb you at full speed and must be dodged or blasted out of the sky. This is a personal favorite as far as the system goes and the arcade version was even better.

Space Fortress (1981)

Space Fortress is a game in which the player must navigate a spaceship and shoot missiles at and take over an entire space fortress while at the same time defending their own fortress, hence the name of the game. Surprisingly, it is one of the first video games to have voices as a man and a woman briefly talk during the actual game. Constant enemy attacks occur and you must blast away fast in order to protect your home fortress.

Space Fortress is nearly impossible to beat and the player shoots his missiles from a space ship. You have to aim and shoot at several aliens at once.

Star Battle (1978)

Star Battle is a third person shooter based in space and it is an direct copy from the first Star Wars film. Players can control two fighter jets and can goes fast or slow down drastically with the joy stick being shifted up or down. The sound effects are perfect and most of the music is similar to that found in the original Star Wars.

Blackjack and Poker (1978)

This gambling 3 game cartridge features Poker, Acey-Deucey and Black Jack. It is for 1 or 2 players and the game is actually addicting even know it never shows a person the entire game.

Poker Video Game

Poker and Black Jack have been on video game consoles ever since games started.

Muncher (1981)

Muncher is a knock off of Atari's Pac Man and it was one or two player. The game is nearly identical, however, in Muncher you can stop player movement when you let free of the joystick. The screen is way too small and it hurts the gameplay tremendously. Otherwise it is fun and reminded me of Pac-Man even down to the cherry and banana fruit.

Galactic Invasion (1981)

Galactic Invasion is a one player space shooter that is similar in form to Space Invaders. Your ship goes from left to right shooting lasers at aliens. The aliens form lines in air but sometimes several will dive bomb directly towards you. The best part about this game is that the aliens get faster and more abundant as you progress.
