Best Gifts For 2 Year Old Boys

Updated on September 1, 2014

What to buy for a 2 year old boy

If you're looking for the perfect gift for a 2 year old boy in your life, look no further! In this article I have highlighted some of my 2 year old son's favorite toys as well as my favorite toys for him.

I have only listed toys that we personally own and that meet my personal requirements for durability, longevity and fun. Many of the toys listed are still played with by my 4 year old daughter as well which tells me these will be favorites in our home for a long time!

All of these toys are available through Amazon, my favorite online retailer. Look for the links below the toy reviews so you can learn more about each toy.

Wheelies Loops & Swoops Amusement Park

2 year olds (especially boys) are all about cars and this fun car ramp is sure to delight! The Loops 'n Swoops Amusement Park features 2 ramps for Fisher Price Wheelies to zoom down. The first ramp curves through the structure and ends with a song at the bottom. The 2nd ramp is a steep incline that end with an upside down loop and a ramp that sends the wheelie flying.

We actually bought this for my son for his 1st birthday and it has been played with every day since. He is now 2 and a half and still shrieks with delight when the cars loop upside down and shoot off the ramp. As he's gotten older, he's had more fun with pretend play with the wheelies. He now has the characters talk to each other as they drive up the "mountain" or race down the track. It's a delight to watch him play with this toy and I won't be at all surprised if he's still playing with it for years to come. Learn more here.

This toy is 30 inches tall - perfect for toddlers! Recommended age is 18 months - 5 years (lots of time to enjoy this one!) Requires 3 AA batteries for music. The ramp works best with Fisher Price Wheelies but Hot Wheels do fit on the ramps too.

Mack Hauler & Lightening McQueen

What little boy doesn't love Pixar Cars? This exciting toy from Fisher Price features Lightening McQueen and his partner Mack Hauler from the original Cars movie. Lightening is the same size as the FP Wheelies cars and works with other Wheelies sets.

Load McQueen into the back of Hauler and drive him all over the house. The best part about this toy? You can launch Lightening McQueen from the back of the hauler truck! Kids will love shooting McQueen into action again and again! Mack Hauler also plays quotes from the movie with the press of a button.

Building Blocks

Blocks are fabulous educational blocks for kids. We have wooden blocks and Mega Bloks at our house but my 2 year old's favorite blocks are the jumbo cardboard blocks from Melissa & Doug (linked below)

These sturdy blocks are perfect for building giant towers and knocking them down! You can also use them to make teddy bear cages, baby doll beds, tunnels for toy trucks and so much more!

The Melissa and Doug cardboard blocks are reinforced on the inside so they are super strong. The big red blocks can hold up to 150 pounds and the small yellow blocks can hold the weight of most young children. That means that they won't get damaged when your tower falls down or when your child inevitably decides to climb on one.

Recommended age: 2 - 5 years. This 40 block set comes with 24 small (6x4x3) yellow blocks, 8 blue (6x6x3) medium blocks and 8 large (12x6x3 red blocks.

Smart Animals Playset

My kids have a few of the Go! Go! Smart Wheels sets from V-Tech: the train, airport and this animal tree set. All of the sets are able to connect together and we have some add-on vehicles to add to the fun.

I like the Go! Go! animals the best because it combines the best of two worlds: animals and roads. When worded that way, it actually sounds like a terrible combination but my son loves "driving" his smart animals along the tracks. It's a nice change from his many and various vehicles.

The really neat thing about V-Tech's Go! Go! products are the Smart Points. When a Smart Animal or car drives over a Smart Point it talks or sings. The animals will say things like "I'm a Panda" as well as other fun facts about their species.

The Tree House Playset is great for imaginative play as well as developing fine motor skills. Your toddler will love hiding the panda in the tree house, helping ride the basket elevator and letting him slide down the ramp. Don't forget the shape sorter at the top of the tree house - it's a great way to practice shape and color names!

Thomas Deluxe Starter Set

This Thomas The Train track set is perfect for young kids. The track pieces snap together easily and stay together for hours of fun.

Kids can choose to turn the engine on and watch Thomas chug along or turn it off to manually push the train around the tracks. Use the arrow sign to change the direction Thomas goes when he reaches the junction track.

My 2 year old son loves this train set. He gets a lot of enjoyment just watching Thomas chug around the track. He also loves that he gets to be in control of the direction Thomas takes. Sometimes he turns Thomas off and crawls around pushing Thomas along the track and on the floor. I love that this set can connect to many other sets for added adventures with Thomas. I think we will have to expand at Christmas time!

The perfect trike for toddlers!

Pushable Tricycle

A 2 year old needs a cool way to cruise around the neighborhood even if he doesn't know how to peddle yet! Strollers are so last year. Your 2 year old will be stylin' as you stroll around the block with the 4 in 1 Trike from Radio Flyer.

We got my daughter this trike when she turned two. We pushed her on it until she learned to pedal around age 3. She enjoyed pedaling it for over a year until she started asking for a "big girl bike". Now, we use it to push her 2 year old brother around the block. He's still working on the pedaling so I know we'll be using this trike for a few more years.

The trike easily adjusts to fit a child's age and needs regarding safety. From a high back seat with a harness, to a standard seat that he pedals himself, this bike will grow with your son. The handle is comfortable and makes it really easy to steer. We love taking this tricycle on trips to the park or just around the block. It's also pretty easy to take the handle off so the trike will fit in the trunk of a car for bigger adventures.
