Updated on June 28, 2012

Author's Disclaimer

2011 was an excellent year for video games, hands down. Before I share my list of video games, note that it is not an exclusive list by any means. There were several incredible video games that came out in 2011.

Also, this is not per say, my favorite video games of 2011, although it is pretty close. This list will just highlight the games that ,in general, most video gamers loved and appreciated from the year 2011.

Also, note that this list will not be in any particular order; it is randomly assembled.

With that in mind, I hope you enjoy your read!

  2. Madden NFL 12

This was a highly anticipated game of 2011, especially for those who enjoyed playing Batman: Arkham Asylum, its prequel. This games sends its players directly into the hear of Gotham City, five times bigger than the world in its prequel. Batman: Arkham city is full of new classic characters and villains from the Batman universe to brilliantly entice Batman fans of all ages. If you played and enjoyed Arkham Asylum, you will in no doubt enjoy the illustrious journey of action and cinematography Batman: Arkham City brings to the table.

Madden NFL 12

Release Date: August 2011

Rated E for Everyone

Developer: Electronic Arts

Gamestop User Rating: 7.5

Some people will say that this game did not have many updates, and was pretty similar to its predecessors. This can be said of any sports game. The gameplay will usually stay the same just like in Fifa or NBA 2K. The difference is in what extras the game brings to the playing table. Madden NFL 12 brings a more enhanced franchise mode(containing 100 new features, all new collison system, player performance, etc. The custom playbooks also add a unique flavor to the game. Madden NFL 12 another highly anticipated game of 2011.

Minecraft

Release Date: November 18, 2011

Developer: Mojang

IGN Rating: 9.0

This game has attracted many people primarily because of the ability to create your own world. You do what you want, when you want, and how you want. There really are no limitations. You are your own creator and designer. Some people do not like the music, because it can get rather annoying. Solution: turn it off and play your Itunes playlist. Problem solved! This game is a great boredom solver or time filler, especially for those rainy days when you have nothing else to do(ie, have all ready read your complete archive of books and watched every movie you own at least twice, if not more).

Legend of Zelda: Skyword Sword

Release Date: November 20, 2011

Rated E10+ for Everyone E10+ Animated Blood, Comic Mischief, Fantasy Violence

Developer: Nintendo

Gamestop User Rating: 9.3

Has Ocarina met its match? To date, in my opinion, this is best Wii version of Zelda. Being a long time devoted fan of the series, I would have to say that Ocarina of Time is still the best Zelda game in the series(not including systems before N64). Now having said that, it is still an amazing game. Some people gripe and complain about the motion controls. Note that you must have a motion plus wil controller to play this game! I have had no problem with the controls, and it has even made the game more fun for me. This game is an excellent choice for those die hard Zelda fans; you will certainly not be disappointed!

Gears of War 3

Rated M for Mature: Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Strong Language

Gamestop User Rating: 9.1

This game is an exceptional and highly anticipated sequel to the legendary Gears of War series. The player continues to fight with Marcus Fenix, leader of the Delta squad. While he and his people wage war against the locust, a new and deeper threat arises to the surface. Who is the threat and will Fenix survive? You will have to find out for yourself!

Release Date: August 23, 2011

Rated M for Mature: Blood, Drug Reference, Intense Violence, Sexual Themes, Strong Language, Use of Alcohol.

Developer: Eidos Studios Montreal

Gamestop User Rating: 8.6

This is the third sci-fi action game in the Deus Ex series. This game starts out with a black ops team raids America's most prestigious biotechnology firms and kills the man main character Adam was supposed to protect. The game then turns into a vicious catch the killer by whatever means possible type game. I ended up not liking the game to much but only because of the fact that you have to constantly be modding and leveling your character to succeed. This is just my opinion, but you do not mind this type of game, it will be of no harm or concern to you. Other than that i did enjoy the game story and cinematography.

L.A. Noire

Release Date: May 17, 2011

Rated M for Mature: Blood and Gore, Nudity, Sexual Themes, Strong Language, Use of Drugs, Violence

Developer: Team Bondi

Publisher: Rockstar

Gamestop User Rating: 8.4

This was my first game for my personal Xbox 360. The only negative thing I can say of this game would be perhaps the repetition or mundane process of the game. But, it just like Grand Theft Auto. Although it may become a little repetitious, in the end when it is all said and done, it is still very enjoyable. L.A. Noire is set up in the post World War II era. This game combines several features such as clue solving, car chases, and a unique interrogation system to entice the gamer.

Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim

Release Date: November 11, 2011

Rated M for Mature: Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Sexual Themes, Use of Alcohol

Developer: Bethesda Game Studios

Publisher: Bethesda Softworks

Gamestop User Rating: 9.4

This game was probably one of the most, if not the number on anticipated game of 2011. Skyrim, number five in the Elder Scrolls series, takes place after the death of the High King of Skyrim. Syrims future lies hopelessly in the balance as it longingly waits for the hero who contains the "voice" and power to stand up against the dragons who have seemingly desecrated the land.

I am not a big fan of these type games, although I mus admit the graphics, story, and cinematography are outstandingly remarkable.

This game is set up in a fantasy type world where the player will find himself fighting through various dungeons. The reward system in this game adds a big incentive for the player. If you do mind long and challenging games with various difficulty levels, this game is a must buy!

Have not played Arkham City yet, but will do. Some of the earlier batman outings seemed a bit weak in physics, but this one has been getting really strong press.

Also, I can attest to Gear of War 3. Great overview of a year! Voting up.

Skyrim was by far my favorite! I blew 250 hours on oblivion and imagine I will eventually do the same for skyrim. I've only been able to play it a little here and there since I had a baby a only a month after it came out. Most of the time I have to game is taken up by playing call of duty with my husband and our brothers. Which I was surprised CoD wasn't on your list.

I really hope you do a 2012 list! I know I cannot wait until black ops 2 (4 player zombies!!), the new tomb raider, borderlands 2 and resident evil 6 all come out.

The batman games are great but I'm always disappointed by how short they are, same goes for all the tomb raider games... I can only hope the reboot will last longer.

      Mama Kim,

Thanks for stoppping by! I think it is awesome that you love playing video games! I purposefully didn't put Call of Duty on this list because that was a given! I wanted to talk about all the others. And besides Call of Duty and Battlefield have too much conflict and argument on which is better, so I didn't want to include COD. I hate Battlefield! :) CODMW3 has probably been my personal favorite from 2011. Yes, I do agree wit you on how short Batman games are, but the story line is enough for me in those games! Thanks for reading Mama Kim!

Oh good, I don't know how you can be a hard core gamer and not play a FPS! ^_^ Well then Josh, what game are you most looking forward to in this last half of 2012?

      Mama Kim,

Good question, COD black ops, the new one will probably be my favorite game to look forward too! What is yours?

    • Mama Kim 8 profile image

Same for me, black ops 2 especially the zombie part of it. Borderlands 2 is second.

Xbox all the way baby! Lol. Have you ever played Zelda? Talk about classic!!!

    • Mama Kim 8 profile image

      Sasha Kim 4 years ago

no... I'm a bit young for some of the classics :P I just haven't gotten into them and its hard to go backwards into lesser graphics. Same reason I haven't played a lot of the FF games. Heck I was 8 when my husbands fav FF VII came out. I've been thinking about popping in one of the newer zelda games my husband has.

I had to read this since I use online dating sites and too many guys that want to date me are obsessed with Skyrim. Now that I understand the game, I still don't get why anyone is obsessed with it, but whatever. Now I know I can cross those guys off my dating list. :-) Thanks for sharing this info!

It's surprising that these games lived up to their pre-release hype. Madden is amazing, how it stays trending year after year. I enjoyed your list, and I agree with most of your picks.
