Best Toys for 10 Month old Baby (Girls and Boys)

Updated on November 14, 2014

What are the best toys for 10 month old boy or girl?

It's difficult to know the best toys to buy a 10 month old baby. I remember when my son was that age I didn't have a clue as to what to buy a 10 month old. So I did lots of research into toys and I made lots of observations as to the toys he liked to play with at home, at friends and relatives houses and at playgroups. I have become quite knowledgeable as to the kinds of toys that babies like and I have come up with the following list of the best toys for 10 month old babies.

Update : Since writing this article, I have had a second son and I've updated the article to include toys that he liked playing with at the same age.

Educational toys for 10 month old babies

Quite a lot of toys for 10 month olds are educational as they spend much of their awake time learning and developing. However I think the following toys are particularly good educational toys.

LeapFrog Animal Adventure Learning Table (Frustration Free Packaging)

Activity tables can teach children a lot through play. The Leapfrog activity table is particularly good as it introduces numbers, colors, shapes, opposites as well as introducing language through songs. It's a toy that has over 100 activities and songs too, including instruments such as the drum in the middle and a mini piano. There are 5 interactive animals to entertain babies. and will keep them occupied for ages. We bought the leapfrog table for our second son and he really enjoyed it. I'm sure it helped him learn the words for his colors. Another good thing I like about it is that you can take the legs off and just lay it on the floor so if your 10 month old isn't steady on his or her feet this is a good option to allow them to play. I would say it's a good toy for babies until they are around 18 months.

The First Years Stack Up Cups

Stacking cups are a great toy for this age. 10 month old babies will love knocking down towers and nesting the cups. It won't be long before they're building their own towers and knocking them down. I found they were good to teach my son colors. Every baby should have some stacking cups. My son played with them a lot and they are great for developing fine motor skills. We also used our stacking cups as bath toys. They are extremely cheap too.

Walkers for 10 month old babies

Walkers are the perfect toy for 10 month olds. They will be starting to pull themselves up and heading towards their first steps and walkers help them develop the muscles and balance they need.

Or why not get a ride on toy to use as a walker. Many ride on toys have handles on the back which 10 month old babies can uses for balance and push the toys around. When the get older they will love to sit on them and push along with their feet.

My son had a walker with bricks which I really liked. He used to enjoy taking the bricks out of the walker and putting them back in again. They were also great for building and knocking down towers. It wasn't long before he was racing around with the walker.

I also like the Vtech Activity walker. You can take the activity table off and lay it on the floor so baby can play with all the activities while sitting. They can also push along the walker too, so it's like two toys in one.

Little Tikes Push & Ride Racer

I like the race and rider opposite. This used to be at a playgroup I went to with my eldest son and all the kids were fighting to have a go on this one. 10 month olds will enjoy being able to push the toy around with a handle at the bag and as they get older they will love to ride on it too. My eldest was still playing with this toy at age 3 1/2 so it's long lasting.

Fun Educational Toys

Fisher Price make a great range of learning toys for babies and toddlers called Laugh and Learn toys.

One of the most popular in this range at the moment is the Laugh and Learn Crawl Around Car featured below.

This toy has so many fun and educational activities for babies. There's is a shape sorter door, obviously great for teaching shapes and improving fine motor skills. There's a dashboard with interactive features including turn the key, honk the horn, turn the steering wheel or shift the gear to activate lights, learning phrases and songs. There's 75+ sing-along songs, tunes and phrases.

Babies will love opening and closing the door and moving the windshield wiper to learn about the weather. There's also a ramp with three balls for extra ball play.

Classic baby toys for 10 month old babies

Quite often it was the toys without the flashing lights and loud sounds that would engage my son for a while. There is a lot to be said for traditional toys as they have stood the test of time. Here are a few of my top picks of toys that don't require batteries for 10 month old babies.

ALEX Discover My Busy Town Wooden Activity Cube

My eldest son was given an activity center for Christmas when he was 10 months old and he has always been fascinated by the beads on the top. At age 2 now and he'll still went played with the beads and move them from one side to another. There are also activities on the sides with letters and pictures. It's still great now for introducing my son to letters.

Wood Tone/Slit Drum

Babies love banging on a toy drum. It's great for teaching cause and effect and the toy drum from pintoy makes different sounds depending on where you hit it.

Plan Toy Punch and Drop

I also love toys with which kids can hammer. We had a peg and hammer bench which kept my eldest son occupied for ages. I think this ball and hammer toy is even better. Hammer the balls, then watch them fall down the side. Put them back in for more hammering practice. Great for improving fine motor skills. Kids also like to chase the balls that come with the toy over the floor as well as bang them together. It's also well made and durable.

Leapfrog Spin and Sing Alphabet Zoo

10 month old babies will love spinning the Leapfrog Spin and Sing Alphabet Zoo. As they spin it, they will be rewarded with lights and a song which teaches ABCs and animals. Once the spinning stops so do the lights and the music encouraging baby to spin again. Great for hand and eye co-ordination and teaching letters and animals.

It's also a great highchair toy so will keep them occupied while waiting for their dinner!
