Buy Lego 12v Train Sets

Updated on March 16, 2011

Lego Trains is a large Lego Theme that was first produced in 1966 and has spawned loads and loads of different sub-themes. It started off in 1966 with 4.5v or 12v Sets which lasted up until about 1986. From 1991 9V sets were produced but in 2006-7 Lego decided to merge the Trains into their Power Functions theme and to release Train sets based on the new electric LEGO Power Functions system. This started in 2009 with the release of The Emerald Night Collection.

Such is the interest in the whole Lego Train Genre that it has even produced it's own Quarterly magazine - "RailBricks" along with its own website www.railbricks.com. which has build instructions for different models based on various lego bricks and sets, Track Planning and Forums dedicated to Lego Train sets. It is also supported by the
International LEGO® Train Club Organization who are a bunch of Lego Train enthusiasts.

This hub will concentrate mainly on some of the earlier Lego Trains sets from the 12v era between 1980 to 1991. 12 volts was a voltage standard for Lego Trains sets from 1969 until 1986. In contrast to the older battery powered 4.5V standard, the power of the 12V system came from a DC Transformer delivered by add-on center conductor rails. In order to reach the newer 12V standard, the older 4.5V Trains system could be upgraded by different 12V Trains accessories. Beside the train electricity itself, the 12V Trains system was able to power and control many extendable components, such as automated track accessories or lights.

Ebay is still a great source for some of these used Lego sets and they can be at extremely reasonable prices, Ebay also gives you a huge variety to choose from as well as allowing you to still find items that are no longer available
