The Best Diablo 3 Wizard Builds

Updated on August 11, 2012

Wizard are the best Diablo 3 AoE and crowd control class that deals impressive amount of damage in battles as well as have decent defensive abilities. Wizards can use different types of magic in battles and if the enemy happens to be immune to one type, the wizard won't get confused because he can use another type. Every time Wizard casts a spell, he uses his Arcane Power, the valuable Wizard resource. Although the amount of Arcane Power the Wizard has is limited, it replenishes quickly and there are plenty of spells that consume very little Arcane Power so it is possible to go on casting almost endlessly.

Please note that all builds are designed for a level 60 Wizard Here is a list of different fun and useful Wizard skill builds for you to try:

  • Solo Wizard Build
  • High DPS Wizard Build
  • AoE Wizard Build
  • PVP Wizard Build

Active Skills

  • Venom Hydra (Hydra)
  • Unrelenting Storm (Blizzard)
  • Stretch Time (Slow TIme)
  • Crystal Shell (Diamond Skin)
  • Force Armor (Energy Armor)
  • Force Weapon (Magic Weapon)

Passive Skills

  • Glass Cannon
  • Cold Blooded
  • Astral Presence

If properly geared, a skilled wizard can kill Diablo on Inferno difficulty with this build. It has loads of survivability options as well as decent damage. The Armor buffs are mandatory when it comes to hard difficulty fights. Downside of this build is that the damage really depends on the weapon. It is really hard to pull out good DPS with this build if you have a bad weapon.

Active Skills

  • Attunement (Magic Missile)
  • Venom Hydra (Hydra)
  • Crystal Shell (Diamond Skin)
  • Cold Snap (Frost Nova)
  • Force Weapon (Magic Weapon)
  • Sparkflint (Familiar)

Passive Skills

  • Glass Cannon
  • Astral Presence
  • Temporal Flux

This is the best damage dealing wizards build there is. It deals a huge amount of damage but has very little defenses. That is why this is a typical glass cannon build - if you manage to kill enemy quickly enough, solo play will proceed quite fast but if not, you're dead. Crystal Shell can help you survive a bit longer but it alone might not be enough. That's why this build is best employed in group play.

AoE Wizard Build

Active Skills

  • Attunement (Magic Missile)
  • Tap The Source (Arcane Orb)
  • Prism (Diamond Skin)
  • Stark Winter (Blizzard)
  • Energy Tap (Energy Armor)
  • Improved Archon (Archon)

Passive Skills

  • Evocation
  • Glass Cannon
  • Astral Presence

This build gives the Wizard high AoE damage which is great for farming. Not only the AoE damage of this build is high, but also it has a really good Arcane Power regeneration speed that allows the WIzard to use more abilities before running out of Arcane Power. The survivability of this build is far from ideal but as an AoE build it is most likely either used in group play or when farming not so hard hitting monsters. And even if then, there are some decent defensive abilities to use when surrounded by too many enemies.

PVP Wizard Build

Active Skills

  • Time Warp (Slow TIme)
  • Mammoth Hydra (Hydra)
  • Venom (Magic Weapon)
  • Storm Chaser (Energy Twister)
  • Teleport (Archon)
  • Entropy (Disintegrate)

Passive Skills

  • Temporal Flux
  • Galvanizing Ward
  • Arcane Dynamo

This is a great PvP build that gives nice damage, great survivability and has some tricks to employ when the fight gets complicated. The focus of this build is Archon which also gives WIzard the ability to Teleport (with the proper rune). Archon gives loads of damage and also huge 40% armor bonus which can easily change the fight in favor of Wizard. Both active and passive skills are chosen to make life harder for the opponent - a simple damage spell can slow the enemy or give damage boost to the Wizard.
